Surah “The Spoils of War”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 75 verses

8:1
They ask you about the spoils of war. Say, "The spoils belong to God and the Messenger." So be mindful of God, settle your differences, and obey God and His Messenger if you are believers.
8:2
The believers are only those whose hearts tremble when God is mentioned, and when His verses are recited to them, it increases them in faith, and they place their trust in their Lord.
8:3
Those who establish prayer and spend from what We have provided them.
8:4
These are the true believers. They have ranks with their Lord, forgiveness, and generous provision.
8:5
Just as your Lord brought you out of your home for a true purpose, though a group of the believers were reluctant.
8:6
They argued with you about the truth after it had become clear, as if they were being driven to death while watching.
8:7
Remember when God promised you one of the two groups would be yours. You wished for the unarmed one, but God intended to establish the truth by His words and cut off the last remnant of the disbelievers.
8:8
To establish the truth and abolish falsehood, even if the criminals despised it.
8:9
Remember when you cried out to your Lord for help, and He answered you, "I will reinforce you with a thousand angels in succession."
God made this only as good news and to put your hearts at ease. Victory comes only from God. God is Almighty, All-Wise.
Remember when He covered you with drowsiness as a security from Him, and sent down rain from the sky to purify you, remove Satan's filth from you, strengthen your hearts, and steady your feet.
Remember when your Lord revealed to the angels, "I am with you, so strengthen those who believe. I will cast terror into the hearts of those who disbelieve, so strike above their necks and strike off every fingertip."
That is because they opposed God and His Messenger. Whoever opposes God and His Messenger, God is severe in punishment.
That is yours, so taste it, and the disbelievers will have the punishment of the Fire.
O you who believe, when you meet the disbelievers advancing in battle, do not turn your backs to them.
Whoever turns his back to them on that day, unless maneuvering for battle or joining another unit, has brought upon himself the wrath of God. His refuge is Hell, and what a terrible destination.
You did not kill them, but God killed them. You did not throw when you threw, but God threw, so that He might test the believers with a good trial from Him. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
That is so, and God weakens the schemes of the disbelievers.
If you sought a verdict, the verdict has come to you. If you stop, it is better for you. If you return, We will return, and your forces will not help you at all, even if they are many. God is with the believers.
O you who believe, obey God and His Messenger, and do not turn away from him while you hear.
Do not be like those who say, "We hear," while they do not hear.
The worst of creatures in God's sight are the deaf and mute who do not reason.
Had God known any good in them, He would have made them hear. But even if He made them hear, they would have turned away in rejection.
O you who believe, respond to God and to the Messenger when he calls you to what gives you life. Know that God comes between a person and his heart, and that to Him you will be gathered.
Beware of a trial that will not strike only the wrongdoers among you, and know that God is severe in punishment.
Remember when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people would snatch you away. He sheltered you, strengthened you with His support, and provided you with good things so that you might be grateful.
O you who believe, do not betray God and the Messenger, and do not betray your trusts while you know.
Know that your wealth and your children are a trial, and that with God is a tremendous reward.
O you who believe, if you remain mindful of God, He will grant you a criterion, wipe away your sins, and forgive you. God is the possessor of immense grace.
Remember when the disbelievers plotted against you to imprison you, kill you, or expel you. They schemed and God schemed, and God is the best of schemers.
When Our verses are recited to them, they say, "We have heard this. If we wanted, we could say something like it. This is nothing but tales of the ancients."
They said, "O God, if this is the truth from You, then rain down stones upon us from the sky or bring us a painful punishment."
But God would not punish them while you were among them, nor would God punish them while they sought forgiveness.
Yet why should God not punish them when they block people from the Sacred Mosque, though they are not its rightful guardians? Its rightful guardians are only those who are mindful of God, but most of them do not know.
Their prayer at the House was nothing but whistling and clapping. So taste the punishment for your disbelief.
Those who disbelieve spend their wealth to turn people away from God's path. They will spend it, then it will become a source of anguish for them, then they will be defeated. Those who disbelieve will be gathered into Hell.
This is so God may separate the foul from the pure, pile the foul one upon another, heap it all together, and cast it into Hell. Those are the losers.
Say to those who disbelieve, "If you stop, you will be forgiven for what has passed. But if you return, the precedent of earlier peoples has already been set."
Fight them until there is no more persecution and religion belongs entirely to God. If they stop, then God sees all that they do.
If they turn away, then know that God is your protector. What an excellent protector and what an excellent helper.
Know that whatever spoils you take, a fifth belongs to God and to the Messenger, to relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler, if you believe in God and what We sent down upon Our servant on the Day of Distinction, the day the two forces met. God has power over all things.
You were on the near side of the valley, they were on the far side, and the caravan was below you. Had you made an appointment to meet, you would have missed it. But this was so God could accomplish a matter already destined, so that those who perished would perish upon clear proof, and those who survived would survive upon clear proof. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
God showed them to you as few in your dream. Had He shown them to you as many, you would have lost heart and quarreled over the matter. But God kept you safe. He knows what lies within hearts.
When you met, He made them appear few in your eyes, and made you appear few in their eyes, so God could accomplish a matter already destined. To God all matters return.
O you who believe, when you meet a force, stand firm and remember God often, so you may succeed.
Obey God and His Messenger, and do not dispute with one another or you will lose heart and your strength will leave you. Be patient. God is with the patient.
Do not be like those who left their homes full of arrogance and showing off to people, blocking others from God's path. God surrounds everything they do.
Satan made their deeds seem appealing to them and said, "No one can defeat you today. I am your protector." But when the two forces came within sight of each other, he turned on his heels and said, "I am done with you. I see what you do not see. I fear God." God is severe in punishment.
The hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, "Their religion has deluded these people." But whoever puts their trust in God, God is Almighty, All-Wise.
If you could see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved, striking their faces and their backs: "Taste the punishment of burning!"
That is for what your own hands sent ahead. God is never unjust to His servants.
Like the way of Pharaoh's people and those before them: they rejected God's signs, so God seized them for their sins. God is Strong, severe in punishment.
That is because God would never change a blessing He bestowed upon a people until they change what is within themselves. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Like the way of Pharaoh's people and those before them: they denied their Lord's signs, so We destroyed them for their sins and drowned Pharaoh's people. All of them were wrongdoers.
The worst of creatures in God's sight are those who disbelieve, for they will not believe.
Those with whom you made a treaty, then they break their pledge every time, showing no reverence for God.
If you encounter them in battle, make a harsh example of them to scatter those behind them, so they may take heed.
If you fear treachery from a people, throw their treaty back at them on equal terms. God does not love the treacherous.
Let not those who disbelieve think they have escaped. They cannot escape.
Prepare against them whatever force you can muster and cavalry at the ready, to strike fear into God's enemy and your enemy, and others beyond them unknown to you but known to God. Whatever you spend in God's cause will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
If they incline toward peace, then incline toward it and put your trust in God. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
If they intend to deceive you, then God is enough for you. He is the One who strengthened you with His support and with the believers.
He united their hearts. Had you spent all that is on earth, you could not have united their hearts, but God united them. He is Almighty, All-Wise.
O Prophet, God is enough for you and for those believers who follow you.
O Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. If there are a hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they are a people who do not understand.
Now God has lightened your burden, knowing there is weakness among you. So if there are a hundred steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred. If there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand by God's permission. God is with the steadfast.
It is not for a prophet to take captives until he has thoroughly subdued the land. You desire the fleeting gains of this world, but God desires the Hereafter. God is Almighty, Wise.
Had it not been for a prior decree from God, a tremendous punishment would have touched you for what you took.
So eat from what you have gained as lawful and good, and be mindful of God. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
O Prophet, say to the captives in your hands, "If God finds any good in your hearts, He will give you something better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you. God is Forgiving, Merciful."
But if they intend to betray you, they have already betrayed God before, and He gave you power over them. God is All-Knowing, Wise.
Those who believed, emigrated, and strove with their wealth and their lives in God's cause, and those who gave shelter and support, they are allies of one another. As for those who believed but did not emigrate, you owe them no allegiance until they emigrate. Yet if they seek your help in matters of faith, you must help them, except against a people with whom you have a treaty. God sees everything you do.
Those who disbelieve are allies of one another. Unless you do this, there will be turmoil on earth and great corruption.
Those who believed, emigrated, and strove in God's cause, and those who gave shelter and support, they are the true believers. For them is forgiveness and generous provision.
Those who believed later, emigrated, and strove alongside you, they are part of you. But blood relatives have a greater claim on one another in God's Book. God has knowledge of all things.
