A declaration of disavowal from God and His Messenger to those among the polytheists with whom you made a treaty.
Travel freely through the land for four months, but know that you cannot escape God, and that God will disgrace the disbelievers.
A proclamation from God and His Messenger to all people on the day of the Great Pilgrimage: God is free of the polytheists, and so is His Messenger. If you repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, know that you cannot escape God. Give the disbelievers news of a painful punishment.
Except for those polytheists with whom you made a treaty and who have not failed you in anything or supported anyone against you. Fulfill your treaty with them until its term. God loves those who are mindful of Him.
When the sacred months have passed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them. Capture them, besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every ambush. But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then let them go their way. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
If any of the polytheists seeks your protection, grant it to him so he may hear the word of God, then escort him to his place of safety. That is because they are a people who do not know.
How can the polytheists have a treaty with God and His Messenger, except for those with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they remain true to you, remain true to them. God loves those who are mindful of Him.
How can they? If they gain the upper hand over you, they respect neither kinship nor covenant with you. They please you with their mouths while their hearts refuse, and most of them are defiantly disobedient.
They sold the signs of God for a small price and blocked others from His path. How evil is what they have been doing.
They respect neither kinship nor covenant with a believer. They are the transgressors.
But if they repent, establish prayer, and give charity, then they are your brothers in faith. We make the verses clear for people who understand.
If they break their oaths after their treaty and attack your religion, then fight the leaders of disbelief, for they have no binding oaths, so that they may stop.
Will you not fight a people who broke their oaths, plotted to expel the Messenger, and attacked you first? Do you fear them? God is more deserving of your fear, if you are believers.
Fight them, and God will punish them by your hands, humiliate them, grant you victory over them, and heal the hearts of a believing people.
He will remove the rage from their hearts. God turns in mercy to whom He wills. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Did you think you would be left alone without God knowing which of you struggled and took no allies apart from God, His Messenger, and the believers? God is fully aware of what you do.
It is not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of God while they bear witness against themselves to disbelief. Their deeds have come to nothing, and in the Fire they will remain forever.
Only those who believe in God and the Last Day, establish prayer, give charity, and fear none but God should maintain the mosques of God. It is they who may be among the guided.
Do you consider giving water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque equal to believing in God and the Last Day and struggling in the path of God? They are not equal in the sight of God. God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
Those who believed, emigrated, and struggled in the path of God with their wealth and their lives hold a greater rank with God. They are the triumphant.
Their Lord gives them good news of mercy from Him, approval, and gardens where they will have lasting delight.
They will dwell there forever. With God is a tremendous reward.
O you who believe, do not take your fathers and brothers as allies if they prefer disbelief over faith. Whoever among you allies with them, those are the wrongdoers.
Say, "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your spouses, your clan, wealth you have acquired, trade you fear will decline, and homes you cherish are dearer to you than God, His Messenger, and struggling in His path, then wait until God brings His command." God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
God has already given you victory in many battlefields, and on the day of Hunayn, when your great numbers impressed you, but they did not help you at all. The earth, vast as it is, closed in on you, and you turned back in retreat.
Then God sent down His tranquility upon His Messenger and upon the believers, and He sent down forces you did not see. He punished those who disbelieved, and that is the reward of the disbelievers.
Then after that, God turns in mercy to whom He wills. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
O you who believe, the polytheists are impure, so do not let them approach the Sacred Mosque after this year of theirs. If you fear poverty, God will enrich you from His favor if He wills. God is Knowing, Wise.
Fight those who do not believe in God or the Last Day, who do not forbid what God and His Messenger have forbidden, and who do not practice the religion of truth among those who were given the Scripture, until they pay the tribute by hand while they are humbled.
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of God," and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of God." That is what they say with their mouths, imitating the words of those who disbelieved before them. May God destroy them! How deluded they are!
They have taken their rabbis and their monks as lords besides God, and the Messiah, son of Mary. Yet they were commanded to worship one God. There is no god but Him. Glory be to Him, far above what they associate with Him.
They want to extinguish the light of God with their mouths, but God refuses anything except to perfect His light, even if the disbelievers hate it.
He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions, even if the polytheists hate it.
O you who believe, many of the rabbis and monks devour people's wealth wrongfully and turn others away from the path of God. Those who hoard gold and silver and do not spend it in the path of God, give them news of a painful punishment.
On the Day when it will be heated in the fire of Hell and their foreheads, sides, and backs will be branded with it: "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you used to hoard."
The number of months with God is twelve months in the decree of God since the day He created the heavens and the earth. Of these, four are sacred. That is the upright religion, so do not wrong yourselves during them. Fight the polytheists collectively as they fight you collectively, and know that God is with those who are mindful of Him.
Postponing sacred months is an increase in disbelief. Those who disbelieve are led astray by it: they permit it one year and forbid it another year to match the number that God has made sacred, thus permitting what God has forbidden. Their evil deeds have been made appealing to them. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
O you who believe, what is wrong with you that when you are told, "March forth in the cause of God," you cling heavily to the earth? Are you content with the life of this world over the Hereafter? The enjoyment of this worldly life compared to the Hereafter is nothing but little.
If you do not march forth, He will punish you with a painful punishment and replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him at all. God has power over all things.
If you do not help him, God has already helped him when the disbelievers drove him out, the second of two, when they were in the cave, when he said to his companion, "Do not grieve, God is with us." Then God sent down His tranquility upon him and supported him with forces you did not see, and He made the word of the disbelievers the lowest, while the word of God is the highest. God is Mighty, Wise.
March forth, whether light or heavy, and strive with your wealth and your lives in the cause of God. That is better for you, if only you knew.
Had it been an easy gain and a short journey, they would have followed you, but the distance seemed too far for them. They will swear by God, "Had we been able, we would have gone out with you." They destroy themselves, and God knows they are liars.
God has pardoned you. Why did you give them permission before it became clear to you who was truthful and you knew who the liars were?
Those who believe in God and the Last Day do not ask your permission to be excused from striving with their wealth and their lives. God knows well those who are mindful of Him.
Only those who do not believe in God and the Last Day ask your permission, those whose hearts are filled with doubt, so they waver in their doubt.
Had they truly intended to go forth, they would have prepared for it. But God disliked their setting out, so He held them back, and it was said, "Stay behind with those who stay behind."
Had they gone out among you, they would have added nothing but confusion, rushing around in your midst seeking to stir up discord. Among you are those who would have listened to them. God knows well the wrongdoers.
They sought to stir up discord before and turned matters upside down for you, until the truth came and God's command prevailed, much to their dismay.
Among them is one who says, "Give me permission and do not put me to trial." Have they not already fallen into trial? Hell will surely engulf the disbelievers.
If good fortune touches you, it grieves them. But if disaster strikes you, they say, "We took our precautions beforehand," and they turn away rejoicing.
Say, "Nothing will ever befall us except what God has decreed for us. He is our Protector, and in God let the believers place their trust."
Say, "What are you waiting for us except one of two good outcomes? While we are waiting for God to strike you with punishment from Himself or at our hands. So wait, we are waiting with you."
Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly, it will never be accepted from you. You have been a defiantly disobedient people."
Nothing prevents their contributions from being accepted except that they have rejected God and His Messenger, they come to prayer only with laziness, and they spend only with reluctance.
So do not let their wealth or their children impress you. God only intends to punish them through these things in this worldly life, and that their souls depart while they are disbelievers.
They swear by God that they are part of you, but they are not part of you. They are only a people who are afraid.
If they could find a refuge, or caves, or any place to enter, they would rush headlong toward it.
Among them are those who criticize you regarding the distribution of charity. If they are given some of it, they are pleased, but if they are not given any, they become enraged.
If only they had been content with what God and His Messenger gave them and said, "God is enough for us. God will give us from His favor, and so will His Messenger. To God we turn with hope."
Charity is only for the poor, the needy, those who administer it, those whose hearts are to be reconciled, for freeing slaves, for those in debt, for the cause of God, and for the stranded traveler: an obligation from God. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Among them are those who hurt the Prophet and say, "He is all ears." Say, "An ear for your own good. He believes in God and trusts the believers, and he is a mercy to those among you who believe." Those who hurt the Messenger of God will have a painful punishment.
They swear by God to you to please you, but God and His Messenger are more deserving of their efforts to please, if they are truly believers.
Do they not know that whoever opposes God and His Messenger, for him is the fire of Hell, remaining in it forever? That is the ultimate disgrace.
The hypocrites fear that a chapter will be sent down exposing what is in their hearts. Say, "Mock all you want, God will bring out exactly what you dread."
If you ask them, they will surely say, "We were only chatting and joking around." Say, "Was it God, His verses, and His Messenger you were mocking?"
Make no excuses. You have rejected faith after believing. If We pardon some of you, We will punish others because they were criminals.
The hypocrite men and hypocrite women are all the same. They promote evil and forbid good and clench their fists tight. They forgot God, so He forgot them. The hypocrites are truly the corrupt ones.
God has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the Fire of Hell, dwelling there forever. It is enough for them. God has cursed them, and they will have a lasting punishment.
Like those before you who were mightier than you in strength and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their share, and you have enjoyed your share just as those before you enjoyed theirs. You have plunged into idle talk just as they plunged. Their deeds have come to nothing in this world and the next, and they are the losers.
Has the news not reached them of those before them: the people of Noah, Aad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the inhabitants of Midian, and the overturned cities? Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. God would never wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
The believing men and believing women are allies of one another. They promote good and forbid evil, establish prayer, give charity, and obey God and His Messenger. God will have mercy on them. God is Almighty, Wise.
God has promised the believing men and believing women gardens with rivers flowing beneath them, dwelling there forever, and beautiful homes in the Gardens of Eden. But approval from God is greater. That is the supreme triumph.
O Prophet, strive hard against the disbelievers and the hypocrites and be stern with them. Their refuge is Hell, and what a wretched destination.
They swear by God they said nothing, yet they certainly uttered words of disbelief and rejected faith after their submission. They plotted what they could not achieve. Their only grievance was that God and His Messenger had enriched them from His grace. If they repent, it will be better for them, but if they turn away, God will punish them with a painful punishment in this world and the next. They will have no protector or helper on earth.
Among them are those who made a covenant with God: "If He gives us from His grace, we will surely give in charity and be among the righteous."
But when He gave them from His grace, they became stingy with it and turned away in aversion.
So He caused hypocrisy to settle in their hearts until the Day they meet Him, because they broke their promise to God and because they kept lying.
Do they not know that God knows their secrets and their private conversations, and that God is the Knower of all that is hidden?
Those who mock the believers who give freely in charity and ridicule those who find nothing to give except their own effort, God will mock them, and they will have a painful punishment.
Ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them. Even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, God will never forgive them. That is because they rejected God and His Messenger, and God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
Those who stayed behind rejoiced at sitting idle behind the Messenger of God and hated to strive with their wealth and their lives in the cause of God. They said, "Do not march out in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is far hotter." If only they could understand.
Let them laugh a little and weep much as recompense for what they used to commit.
If God returns you to a group of them and they ask your permission to go out, say, "You will never go out with me, ever, and you will never fight an enemy alongside me. You were content to sit idle the first time, so sit with those who stay behind."
Never pray over any of them who dies, and never stand at his grave. They rejected God and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.
Do not let their wealth and their children impress you. God only intends to punish them through these in this world and for their souls to depart while they are disbelievers.
When a chapter is revealed commanding them to believe in God and to strive alongside His Messenger, the wealthy among them ask your permission and say, "Leave us to be with those who sit behind."
They are content to be with those who stay behind, and a seal has been set upon their hearts, so they do not understand.
But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove with their wealth and their lives. For them are all good things, and they are the successful.
God has prepared for them gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will dwell forever. That is the supreme triumph.
The Bedouins with excuses came seeking permission to stay behind, while those who lied to God and His Messenger simply sat back. A painful punishment will strike those among them who disbelieved.
There is no blame on the weak, the sick, or those who find nothing to spend, as long as they are sincere to God and His Messenger. There is no grounds for blame against those who do good. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
Nor is there blame on those who came to you asking to be provided with mounts, and when you said, "I have nothing to carry you on," they turned away with their eyes overflowing with tears, grieving that they had nothing to contribute.
Blame falls only on those who ask your permission while they are wealthy. They were content to stay behind with those who remain, and God has sealed their hearts, so they do not understand.
They will make excuses to you when you return to them. Say, "Do not make excuses. We will never believe you. God has already informed us about your affairs. God will see your deeds, and so will His Messenger. Then you will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
They will swear by God to you when you return to them, so that you may leave them alone. So leave them alone. They are filth, and their dwelling is Hell as payment for what they used to do.
They swear to you so that you may be pleased with them. But even if you are pleased with them, God is not pleased with the defiantly disobedient people.
The Bedouins are more severe in disbelief and hypocrisy, and more likely to be ignorant of the limits of what God has sent down to His Messenger. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Among the Bedouins are those who consider what they spend as a loss and await misfortune to strike you. Upon them will be the evil turn of fate. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Yet among the Bedouins are those who believe in God and the Last Day and consider what they spend as a means of drawing near to God and gaining the prayers of the Messenger. It is certainly a means of nearness for them. God will admit them into His mercy. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
The forerunners, the first of the Emigrants and the Helpers, and those who followed them in excellence: God is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them gardens with rivers flowing beneath, where they will dwell forever. That is the supreme triumph.
Among the desert Arabs around you are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina as well. They have grown stubborn in hypocrisy. You do not know them, but We know them. We will punish them twice, then they will be returned to a tremendous punishment.
Others have confessed their sins, having mixed righteous deeds with bad ones. Perhaps God will turn to them in mercy. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
Take from their wealth a charity to purify them and cleanse them with it, and pray for them. Your prayers are a comfort to them. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Do they not know that God is the One who accepts repentance from His servants and receives charities, and that God is the Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful?
Say, "Work, and God will see your work, as will His Messenger and the believers. You will be returned to the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
Others are deferred, awaiting God's decree: either He will punish them or He will turn to them in mercy. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
Those who built a mosque to cause harm, spread disbelief, divide the believers, and serve as an outpost for those who previously waged war against God and His Messenger: they will swear, "We intended nothing but good." But God bears witness that they are liars.
Never stand in it. A mosque founded on mindfulness of God from the first day is more worthy for you to stand in. In it are men who love to purify themselves, and God loves those who purify themselves.
Is one who founded his building on mindfulness of God and His pleasure better, or one who founded his building on the edge of a crumbling cliff, so it collapsed with him into the fire of Hell? God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
The building they constructed will never cease to be a source of doubt in their hearts, unless their hearts are cut to pieces. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
God has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight in the cause of God, so they kill and are killed. It is a true promise binding upon Him in the Torah, the Gospel, and the Quran. Who fulfills their promise better than God? So rejoice in the bargain you have made. That is the supreme triumph.
Those who repent, who worship, who praise, who journey, who bow, who prostrate, who command what is right and forbid what is wrong, and who guard the limits set by God: give good news to the believers.
It is not for the Prophet and those who believe to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are companions of the Blazing Fire.
Abraham's seeking forgiveness for his father was only because of a promise he had made to him. But when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of God, he disowned him. Abraham was truly tender-hearted, forbearing.
God would never lead a people astray after He has guided them until He makes clear to them what they should avoid. God knows all things.
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. You have no protector or helper besides God.
God has turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants, and the Helpers who followed him in the hour of hardship, after the hearts of a group of them had nearly swerved. Then He turned to them in mercy. He is truly Compassionate and Merciful to them.
And to the three who were left behind, until the earth, vast as it is, closed in on them, and their own souls closed in on them, and they realized there was no refuge from God except with Him. Then He turned to them so they could repent. God is the Ever-Accepting of repentance, the Merciful.
O you who believe, be mindful of God and stand with the truthful.
It was not for the people of Medina and the surrounding Bedouins to stay behind from God's Messenger or to prefer their own lives over his. That is because no thirst, fatigue, or hunger strikes them in God's cause, nor do they tread any ground that enrages the disbelievers, nor do they inflict any blow upon an enemy, except that a righteous deed is recorded for them. God never wastes the reward of those who do good.
They do not spend anything, small or large, nor do they cross any valley, except that it is recorded for them, so that God may reward them with the best of what they used to do.
It is not for the believers to march out all together. Why not have a group from every division stay behind to gain deep understanding of the religion and warn their people when they return to them, so that they may be cautious?
O you who believe, fight those disbelievers nearest to you, and let them find harshness in you. Know that God is with those who are mindful of Him.
Whenever a chapter is sent down, some of them say, "Which of you has this increased in faith?" As for those who believe, it increases them in faith and they rejoice.
But as for those with sickness in their hearts, it adds filth to their filth, and they die as disbelievers.
Do they not see that they are tested once or twice every year? Yet they do not repent, nor do they take heed.
Whenever a chapter is sent down, they glance at one another: "Is anyone watching you?" Then they slip away. God has turned their hearts away because they are a people who do not understand.
A messenger has come to you from among yourselves. Your suffering weighs heavily upon him. He is deeply concerned for you, and to the believers he is compassionate and merciful.
If they turn away, say, "God is enough for me. There is no god but Him. In Him I place my trust, and He is the Lord of the Mighty Throne."
