Surah “Cattle, Livestock”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 165 verses

6:1
All praise belongs to God, who created the heavens and the earth and made darkness and light. Yet those who disbelieve set up equals to their Lord.
6:2
He is the One who created you from clay, then decreed a term, and a specified term is with Him. Yet you still doubt.
6:3
He is God in the heavens and on the earth. He knows your secrets and what you reveal, and He knows what you acquire.
6:4
Not a single sign from their Lord's signs comes to them except that they turn away from it.
6:5
They denied the truth when it came to them, so news of what they used to mock will soon reach them.
6:6
Have they not seen how many generations We destroyed before them? We had established them on earth more firmly than We have established you. We sent the sky pouring rain upon them and made rivers flow beneath them. Then We destroyed them for their sins and raised up other generations after them.
6:7
Even if We had sent down to you a book on parchment and they touched it with their own hands, those who disbelieve would say, "This is nothing but obvious magic."
6:8
They say, "Why has no angel been sent down to him?" If We had sent down an angel, the matter would have been settled, and they would be given no respite.
6:9
If We had made him an angel, We would have made him appear as a man, and We would have confused them just as they confuse themselves.
Messengers before you were mocked, but those who ridiculed them were engulfed by the very thing they mocked.
Say, "Travel through the earth, then see what became of those who denied."
Say, "To whom belongs everything in the heavens and the earth?" Say, "To God." He has prescribed mercy upon Himself. He will surely gather you on the Day of Resurrection, about which there is no doubt. Those who have lost their own souls are the ones who do not believe.
To Him belongs whatever rests in the night and the day, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
Say, "Should I take as a protector anyone other than God, the Originator of the heavens and the earth, when He feeds and is not fed?" Say, "I have been commanded to be the first to submit, and do not be among those who associate partners with God."
Say, "I fear, if I disobey my Lord, the punishment of a tremendous Day."
Whoever is spared from it on that Day, He has shown him mercy, and that is the clear triumph.
If God touches you with harm, none can remove it except Him. And if He touches you with good, He has power over all things.
He is the Overpowering over His servants, and He is the All-Wise, the All-Aware.
Say, "What is the greatest testimony?" Say, "God is witness between me and you. This Quran has been revealed to me so that I may warn you with it, and whoever it reaches. Do you really testify that there are other gods besides God?" Say, "I do not testify to that." Say, "He is only One God, and I am free of what you associate with Him."
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls are the ones who do not believe.
Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies against God or denies His revelations? The wrongdoers will never succeed.
On the Day We gather them all together, We will say to those who associated partners with God, "Where are your partners that you used to claim?"
Then their only response will be to say, "By God, our Lord, we were not polytheists."
See how they lie against themselves, and how what they used to fabricate has deserted them.
Some of them listen to you, but We have placed coverings over their hearts so they cannot understand it, and deafness in their ears. Even if they saw every sign, they would not believe in it. So when they come to you arguing, those who disbelieve say, "This is nothing but ancient fables."
They forbid others from it and distance themselves from it. They destroy only themselves, yet they do not realize it.
If only you could see when they are made to stand before the Fire. They will say, "If only we could be sent back! We would not deny the verses of our Lord, and we would be among the believers."
No, what they used to hide before has now become clear to them. Even if they were sent back, they would return to what they were forbidden. They are liars.
They say, "There is nothing but our worldly life, and we will not be resurrected."
If only you could see when they are made to stand before their Lord. He will say, "Is this not the truth?" They will say, "Yes, by our Lord!" He will say, "Then taste the punishment for your disbelief."
Lost are those who denied the meeting with God. When the Hour comes upon them suddenly, they will cry, "What grief for what we neglected!" They will carry their burdens on their backs. How terrible is what they carry!
The worldly life is nothing but play and amusement. The home of the Hereafter is far better for those who are mindful of God. Will you not reason?
We know that what they say grieves you. It is not you they reject, but the wrongdoers deny the signs of God.
Messengers before you were rejected, yet they patiently endured rejection and persecution until Our help came to them. None can alter the words of God. News of the messengers has already reached you.
If their rejection weighs heavily on you, then if you could seek a tunnel into the earth or a ladder into the sky to bring them a sign, do so. Had God willed, He would have united them all upon guidance. So do not be among the ignorant.
Only those who listen will respond. As for the dead, God will raise them, then to Him they will be returned.
They say, "Why has no miracle been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "God is fully capable of sending down a miracle, but most of them do not know."
There is no creature on earth, nor any bird flying with its wings, except that they are communities like you. We have neglected nothing in the Book. Then to their Lord they will be gathered.
Those who deny Our signs are deaf and mute, in total darkness. Whoever God wills, He leads astray, and whoever He wills, He places on a straight path.
Say, "Consider this: if God's punishment came upon you, or the Hour arrived, would you call upon anyone other than God, if you are truthful?"
No, it is Him you would call upon, and He would remove what you called upon Him for, if He wills, and you would forget whatever you associated with Him.
We sent messengers to nations before you and seized them with hardship and suffering so that they might humble themselves.
If only they had humbled themselves when Our might came upon them! But their hearts hardened, and Satan made their deeds seem appealing to them.
When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We opened upon them the gates of everything, until just as they were rejoicing in what they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were left in despair.
So the wrongdoing people were cut off to the last. All praise belongs to God, Lord of all worlds.
Say, "Consider this: if God took away your hearing and your sight and sealed your hearts, what god other than God could restore them to you?" See how We explain the signs in different ways, yet they still turn away.
Say, "Consider this: if God's punishment came upon you suddenly or openly, would any be destroyed except the wrongdoing people?"
We send the messengers only as bearers of good news and as warners. Whoever believes and reforms, no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
Those who deny Our signs will be touched by punishment for their defiance.
Say, "I do not tell you that I possess the treasures of God, nor do I know the unseen, nor do I tell you that I am an angel. I only follow what is revealed to me." Say, "Are the blind and the seeing equal? Will you not reflect?"
Warn with it those who fear being gathered before their Lord, having no protector or intercessor besides Him, so that they may become mindful.
Do not drive away those who call upon their Lord morning and evening, seeking His Face. You are not accountable for them in any way, nor are they accountable for you in any way. If you drove them away, you would be among the wrongdoers.
This is how We have tested some of them through others, so they say, "Are these the ones God has favored among us?" Does God not know best who are the grateful?
When those who believe in Our verses come to you, say, "Peace be upon you. Your Lord has prescribed mercy upon Himself: whoever among you does evil out of ignorance, then repents afterward and reforms, He is Forgiving, Merciful."
This is how We explain the verses in detail, so that the way of the criminals becomes clear.
Say, "I have been forbidden to worship those you call upon besides God." Say, "I will not follow your desires, for then I would have gone astray and would not be among the guided."
Say, "I stand on clear proof from my Lord, yet you have denied it. I do not have what you seek to hasten. Judgment belongs only to God. He declares the truth, and He is the best of judges."
Say, "If I had what you seek to hasten, the matter would have been settled between me and you. God knows best the wrongdoers."
With Him are the keys of the unseen; none knows them but He. He knows what is on land and in the sea. Not a leaf falls but He knows it, nor a seed in the darkness of the earth, nor anything moist or dry, but it is in a clear record.
He is the One who takes your souls by night and knows what you have done by day, then raises you up in it so that an appointed term may be fulfilled. Then to Him is your return, and then He will inform you of what you used to do.
He is the Dominant over His servants, and He sends guardians over you until, when death comes to one of you, Our messengers take his soul, and they do not fail.
Then they are returned to God, their true Master. Is not judgment His? He is the swiftest of reckoners.
Say, "Who rescues you from the darkness of land and sea when you call upon Him humbly and in secret, saying, 'If He saves us from this, we will surely be among the grateful'?"
Say, "God rescues you from it and from every distress, yet you still associate partners with Him."
Say, "He is capable of sending punishment upon you from above you or from beneath your feet, or dividing you into factions and making you taste the violence of one another." See how We explain the verses so that they may understand.
Your people have denied it, though it is the truth. Say, "I am not a guardian over you."
Every prophecy has its appointed time, and you will come to know.
When you see those who delve into Our verses, turn away from them until they engage in another conversation. If Satan makes you forget, then once you remember, do not sit with the wrongdoing people.
Those who are mindful of God bear no responsibility for their account, but it is a reminder so that they too may become mindful.
Leave those who have taken their religion as play and amusement and whom worldly life has deceived. Remind them with it, lest a soul be ruined by what it has earned. It will have no protector or intercessor besides God, and even if it offers every ransom, none will be accepted from it. Those are the ones ruined by what they earned. For them is a drink of scalding water and a painful punishment for their disbelief.
Say, "Should we call upon, instead of God, what neither benefits us nor harms us, and turn back on our heels after God has guided us? Like one whom the devils have seduced, bewildered in the land, while his companions call him to guidance, saying, 'Come to us!'" Say, "God's guidance is the guidance, and we have been commanded to submit to the Lord of all worlds."
Establish prayer and be mindful of Him. He is the One to whom you will be gathered.
He is the One who created the heavens and the earth in truth. On the Day He says, "Be," it will be. His word is the truth. His is the dominion on the Day the Horn is blown. He is the Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Wise, the All-Aware.
When Abraham said to his father Azar, "Do you take idols as gods? I see you and your people in clear error."
Thus We showed Abraham the dominion of the heavens and the earth, so that he would be among those with certainty.
When the night covered him, he saw a star. He said, "This is my Lord." But when it set, he said, "I do not love things that set."
When he saw the moon rising, he said, "This is my Lord." But when it set, he said, "If my Lord does not guide me, I will surely be among the people who are lost."
When he saw the sun rising, he said, "This is my Lord, this is greater." But when it set, he said, "O my people, I am free of what you associate with God."
I have turned my face toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, as a monotheist, and I am not of those who associate partners with God.
His people argued with him. He said, "Do you argue with me about God when He has guided me? I do not fear what you associate with Him, unless my Lord wills something. My Lord encompasses all things in knowledge. Will you not remember?"
How could I fear what you associate with God when you do not fear that you have associated with God that for which He has sent down no authority to you? So which of the two parties has more right to security, if you know?
Those who believe and do not taint their faith with wrongdoing, for them is security, and they are rightly guided.
That was Our argument which We gave Abraham against his people. We raise in degrees whomever We will. Your Lord is Wise, All-Knowing.
We granted him Isaac and Jacob, each of whom We guided. Before them, We guided Noah, and from his descendants: David, Solomon, Job, Joseph, Moses, and Aaron. This is how We reward those who do good.
And Zechariah, John, Jesus, and Elijah, all were among the righteous.
And Ishmael, Elisha, Jonah, and Lot, each of them We favored above all people.
And from their fathers, their descendants, and their brothers, We chose them and guided them to a straight path.
That is the guidance of God. He guides with it whomever He wills among His servants. Had they associated others with Him, all they did would have been lost.
Those are the ones to whom We gave the Scripture, wisdom, and prophethood. If these people reject it, We have entrusted it to a people who will never reject it.
Those are the ones God has guided, so follow their guidance. Say, "I ask you no payment for this. It is only a reminder for all people."
They have not valued God as He deserves to be valued when they said, "God has never sent down anything to a human being." Say, "Who then sent down the Scripture that Moses brought as a light and guidance for people? You put it on scrolls, revealing some and hiding much. You were taught what neither you nor your fathers knew." Say, "God." Then leave them to play in their idle talk.
This is a blessed Scripture We have sent down, confirming what came before it, so that you may warn the Mother of Cities and those around it. Those who believe in the Hereafter believe in it, and they guard their prayers.
Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies about God, or claims, "I have received revelation," when nothing was revealed to him, or who says, "I will produce something like what God has sent down"? If only you could see when the wrongdoers are in the throes of death and the angels stretch out their hands: "Release your souls! Today you will be repaid with a humiliating punishment for what you used to say about God without truth and for your arrogance toward His signs."
You have come to Us alone, just as We created you the first time. You have left behind everything We granted you. We do not see with you your intercessors whom you claimed were partners in your affairs. All ties between you have been severed, and what you used to claim has abandoned you.
God is the One who splits the seed and the date-stone. He brings the living from the dead and brings the dead from the living. That is God, so how are you deluded?
He is the One who breaks the dawn, and He made the night for rest and the sun and moon for reckoning. That is the design of the Almighty, the All-Knowing.
He is the One who made the stars for you so you may find your way through the darkness of land and sea. We have made the signs clear for people who know.
He is the One who produced you from a single soul, then a place of dwelling and a place of deposit. We have made the signs clear for people who understand.
He is the One who sends down water from the sky, and with it We bring forth the growth of all things. From it We bring forth green shoots, from which We produce clustered grain, and from the palm tree, from its sheaths, come clusters of dates hanging low, and gardens of grapes, olives, and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Look at their fruit when they bear fruit and their ripening. In that are signs for people who believe.
They made the jinn partners with God, though He created them, and they falsely attributed to Him sons and daughters without knowledge. Glory be to Him! He is far above what they describe.
Originator of the heavens and the earth, how could He have a child when He has no companion and He created all things? He has knowledge of all things.
That is God, your Lord. There is no god but Him, Creator of all things, so worship Him. He is Guardian over all things.
Vision cannot grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. He is the Subtle, the All-Aware.
Clear insights have come to you from your Lord. Whoever sees, it is for their own benefit, and whoever is blind, it is to their own loss. I am not a guardian over you.
This is how We vary the signs, so they may say, "You have studied," and so We may make it clear for people who know.
Follow what has been revealed to you from your Lord. There is no god but Him. Turn away from those who associate partners with God.
Had God willed, they would not have associated partners with Him. We have not made you their guardian, nor are you their keeper.
Do not insult those they call upon besides God, or they will insult God out of hostility and ignorance. This is how We have made the deeds of every community seem appealing to them. Then to their Lord is their return, and He will inform them of what they used to do.
They swear by God with their most solemn oaths that if a sign came to them, they would believe in it. Say, "Signs are only with God." What will make you realize that even if the signs came, they still would not believe?
We turn their hearts and their eyes away, just as they refused to believe in it the first time, and We leave them wandering blindly in their transgression.
Even if We sent down angels to them, and the dead spoke to them, and We gathered everything before them face to face, they still would not believe unless God willed. But most of them are ignorant.
This is how We have made for every prophet enemies: devils among humans and jinn, inspiring one another with gilded words of deception. Had your Lord willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they fabricate.
So that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter may incline toward it, and be pleased with it, and commit whatever sins they are committing.
Should I seek a judge other than God when He is the One who sent down to you the Book, explained in detail? Those to whom We gave the Scripture know that it is sent down from your Lord in truth, so do not be among the doubters.
The Word of your Lord has been fulfilled in truth and justice. None can change His words. He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
If you obeyed most of those on earth, they would lead you astray from the path of God. They follow nothing but assumption, and they do nothing but guess.
Your Lord knows best who strays from His path, and He knows best who are guided.
So eat from that over which the name of God has been mentioned, if you believe in His signs.
Why should you not eat from that over which the name of God has been mentioned, when He has explained to you in detail what He has forbidden to you, except when you are compelled by necessity? Many lead others astray by their desires without knowledge. Your Lord knows best the transgressors.
Abandon sin, both outward and inward. Those who commit sin will be repaid for what they used to commit.
Do not eat from that over which God's name has not been pronounced, for that is grave disobedience. The devils inspire their allies to argue with you, and if you obey them, you would be idolaters.
Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among people like one whose likeness is in layers of darkness, never to emerge from it? This is how the deeds of the disbelievers have been made appealing to them.
This is how We have placed in every town its greatest criminals to scheme within it. They scheme only against themselves, but they do not perceive it.
When a sign comes to them, they say, "We will never believe until we are given the like of what God's messengers were given." God knows best where to place His message. Humiliation before God and severe punishment will strike those who committed crimes for what they used to scheme.
Whoever God wills to guide, He opens his chest to Islam. Whoever He wills to leave astray, He makes his chest tight and constricted as though he were climbing into the sky. This is how God places defilement upon those who do not believe.
This is the straight path of your Lord. We have made the verses clear for people who take heed.
For them is the Home of Peace with their Lord, and He is their Protector because of what they used to do.
On the Day He gathers them all together: "O assembly of jinn, you have exploited many humans." Their allies among humans will say, "Our Lord, we enjoyed one another, and we have reached the term You appointed for us." He will say, "The Fire is your dwelling, to remain in it forever, except as God wills." Your Lord is Wise, Knowing.
This is how We make some wrongdoers allies of others because of what they used to earn.
"O assembly of jinn and humans, did messengers not come to you from among you, recounting My verses to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours?" They will say, "We testify against ourselves." The worldly life deceived them, and they will testify against themselves that they were disbelievers.
That is because your Lord would not destroy towns for wrongdoing while their people were unaware.
For each there are ranks according to what they did, and your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
Your Lord is Self-Sufficient, Full of Mercy. If He wills, He can remove you and replace you with whatever He wills, just as He produced you from the descendants of another people.
What you are promised is surely coming, and you cannot escape it.
Say, "O my people, do whatever you can, and so will I. You will come to know who will have the final home. The wrongdoers will never succeed."
They assign to God a share of the crops and livestock He created, saying, "This is for God," so they claim, "and this is for our partners." But what is meant for their partners never reaches God, while what is meant for God reaches their partners. How terrible is their judgment!
Likewise, their partners have made the killing of their children seem appealing to many of the polytheists, to destroy them and confuse their religion for them. Had God willed, they would not have done it. So leave them and what they fabricate.
They say, "These livestock and crops are reserved; none may eat them except whom we permit," so they claim. There are livestock whose backs are forbidden, and livestock over which they do not mention God's name, fabricating lies against Him. He will repay them for what they have been fabricating.
They say, "What is in the wombs of these livestock is exclusively for our males and forbidden to our wives. But if it is stillborn, they may share in it." He will repay them for their claims. He is Wise, Knowing.
Lost are those who killed their children foolishly without knowledge and forbade what God provided them, fabricating lies against God. They have gone astray and were never guided.
He is the One who produced gardens, trellised and untrellised, and palm trees and crops of diverse tastes, and olives and pomegranates, alike and unlike. Eat of their fruit when they bear fruit, and give its due on the day of harvest. Do not be excessive. He does not love the excessive.
From livestock, some for burden and some for meat. Eat of what God has provided you and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is your clear enemy.
Eight pairs: two of sheep and two of goats. Say, "Did He forbid the two males or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Tell me with knowledge, if you are truthful."
Two of camels and two of cattle. Say, "Did He forbid the two males or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain? Or were you witnesses when God commanded you with this?" Who is more unjust than one who fabricates lies against God to lead people astray without knowledge? God does not guide the unjust people.
Say, "I find nothing in what has been revealed to me forbidden to anyone who eats it, except carrion, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine, for it is filth, or a sinful offering dedicated to other than God." But whoever is compelled by necessity, neither desiring nor transgressing, your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.
For those who follow Judaism, We forbade every animal with claws, and from cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat, except what their backs carry or the entrails or what is mixed with bone. That was how We repaid them for their transgression, and We are truthful.
If they deny you, say, "Your Lord possesses vast mercy, but His punishment cannot be turned away from the guilty people."
Those who associate partners with God will say, "If God had willed, we would not have associated anything, nor would our fathers, nor would we have forbidden anything." Just like that, those before them denied until they tasted Our punishment. Say, "Do you have any knowledge you can produce for us? You follow nothing but assumption, and you do nothing but guess."
Say, "To God belongs the conclusive argument. Had He willed, He would have guided you all."
Say, "Bring your witnesses who testify that God forbade this." If they testify, do not testify with them. Do not follow the desires of those who denied Our verses, those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and who set up equals to their Lord.
Say, "Come, let me recite what your Lord has forbidden you: Do not associate anything with Him. Be good to your parents. Do not kill your children out of poverty—We provide for you and for them. Do not approach shameful acts, whether open or secret. Do not take the life that God has made sacred except by right." This He has commanded you, so that you may understand.
Do not approach the orphan's wealth except in the best manner until they reach maturity. Give full measure and weight with justice—We do not burden any soul beyond its capacity. When you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative. Fulfill your covenant with God. This He has commanded you, so that you may remember.
This is My path, straight, so follow it. Do not follow other ways, for they will scatter you from His path. This He has commanded you, so that you may be mindful.
Then We gave Moses the Book, completing Our favor upon those who do good, detailing everything, as guidance and mercy, so that they might believe in the meeting with their Lord.
This is a blessed Book We have sent down, so follow it and be mindful of God, that you may receive mercy.
Lest you say, "The Book was only sent down to two groups before us, and we were unaware of their teachings."
Or lest you say, "If only the Book had been sent down to us, we would have been better guided than them." Now clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. Who is more unjust than one who rejects God's signs and turns away from them? We will repay those who turn away from Our signs with a terrible punishment for their turning away.
Are they waiting for the angels to come to them, or for your Lord to come, or for some of your Lord's signs to come? On the Day when some of your Lord's signs arrive, faith will not benefit a soul that did not believe before or acquired good through its faith. Say, "Wait. We too are waiting."
Those who divided their religion and became sects, you have nothing to do with them. Their affair rests with God, then He will inform them of what they used to do.
Whoever brings a good deed will have ten times its like, and whoever brings an evil deed will only be repaid its equal, and they will not be wronged.
Say, "My Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the way of Abraham, devoted, and he was not among those who associate partners with God."
Say, "My prayer, my worship, my life, and my death are all for God, Lord of all worlds."
He has no partner. This is what I have been commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.
Say, "Should I seek a lord other than God when He is the Lord of everything?" Every soul acquires only against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will inform you about what you used to differ over.
He is the One who made you successors on the earth and raised some of you above others in rank, to test you through what He has given you. Your Lord is swift in punishment, yet He is truly Forgiving, Merciful.
