O you who believe, fulfill your contracts. Livestock animals have been made lawful for you, except what will be recited to you, but hunting is not permitted while you are in a state of pilgrimage. God decrees whatever He wills.
O you who believe, do not violate the rites of God, nor the sacred month, nor the sacrificial offerings, nor the garlanded animals, nor those heading to the Sacred House seeking favor and pleasure from their Lord. Once you have left the state of pilgrimage, you may hunt. Do not let the hatred of a people who once barred you from the Sacred Mosque drive you to transgress. Cooperate in righteousness and mindfulness, and do not cooperate in sin and aggression. Be mindful of God, for God is severe in punishment.
Forbidden to you are carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, what has been slaughtered in the name of other than God, the strangled, the beaten to death, the fallen, the gored, what wild beasts have eaten unless you slaughter it properly, what is sacrificed on stone altars, and dividing by arrows. That is wickedness. Today those who disbelieve have despaired of your religion, so do not fear them, but fear Me. Today I have perfected your religion for you, completed My blessing upon you, and chosen Islam as your religion. But whoever is driven by severe hunger, not inclining toward sin, then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
They ask you what is lawful for them. Say, "Lawful for you are all good things, and what trained hunting animals catch for you, teaching them as God has taught you. So eat what they catch for you and mention the name of God over it. Be mindful of God, for God is swift in reckoning."
Today all good things have been made lawful for you. The food of those who were given the Scripture is lawful for you, and your food is lawful for them. Lawful for you are chaste women from among the believers and chaste women from among those who were given the Scripture before you, provided you give them their bridal gifts, seeking marriage, not fornication or secret affairs. Whoever rejects faith, his deeds become worthless, and in the Hereafter he will be among the losers.
O you who believe, when you rise for prayer, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles. If you are in a state of major impurity, purify yourselves. If you are ill or on a journey, or one of you has come from relieving himself, or you have touched women and cannot find water, then purify yourselves with clean earth, wiping your faces and hands with it. God does not wish to place any hardship on you, but He wishes to purify you and complete His blessing upon you, so that you may be grateful.
Remember God's blessing upon you and His covenant by which He bound you when you said, "We hear and we obey." Be mindful of God. God knows what lies within hearts.
O you who believe, stand firm for God as witnesses to justice, and do not let the hatred of a people drive you to be unjust. Be just, for that is closer to righteousness. Be mindful of God. God is fully aware of what you do.
God has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward.
Those who disbelieve and deny Our signs, they are the companions of Hell.
O you who believe, remember God's blessing upon you when a people intended to stretch their hands against you, but He held back their hands from you. Be mindful of God, and upon God let the believers rely.
God took a covenant from the Children of Israel, and We raised from among them twelve leaders. God said, "I am with you. If you establish prayer, give charity, believe in My messengers, support them, and lend God a good loan, I will wipe away your sins and admit you into Gardens beneath which rivers flow. Whoever among you disbelieves after this has strayed from the right path."
Because they broke their covenant, We cursed them and hardened their hearts. They distort words from their proper places and have forgotten a portion of what they were reminded. You will continue to discover treachery from them, except for a few. So pardon them and overlook. God loves those who do good.
From those who said, "We are Christians," We took their covenant, but they forgot a portion of what they were reminded. So We stirred enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection. God will inform them of what they used to do.
O People of the Scripture, Our messenger has come to you, making clear to you much of what you have been hiding of the Scripture and overlooking much. A light has come to you from God, and a clear Book.
Through it, God guides whoever follows His pleasure to paths of peace, brings them out of darkness into light by His permission, and guides them to a straight path.
Those who say, "God is the Messiah, son of Mary," have certainly disbelieved. Say, "Who could prevent God from anything if He wanted to destroy the Messiah, son of Mary, his mother, and everyone on earth?" To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them. He creates whatever He wills. God has power over all things.
The Jews and Christians say, "We are the children of God and His beloved." Say, "Then why does He punish you for your sins?" No, you are human beings among those He created. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything between them, and to Him is the final return.
O People of the Scripture, Our messenger has come to you, making things clear after a gap between messengers, so you cannot say, "No bearer of good news or warner came to us." Now a bearer of good news and a warner has come to you. God has power over all things.
Moses said to his people, "My people, remember God's blessing upon you when He raised prophets among you, made you kings, and gave you what He had not given anyone else in all the worlds."
"My people, enter the holy land that God has destined for you, and do not turn back on your heels or you will become losers."
They said, "Moses, there is a tyrannical people in it, and we will never enter it until they leave. If they leave, then we will enter."
Two men among those who feared God, whom God had blessed, said, "Enter upon them through the gate. Once you have entered it, you will be victorious. Put your trust in God if you are believers."
They said, "Moses, we will never enter it as long as they remain there. So go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are staying right here."
He said, "My Lord, I have no control over anyone except myself and my brother. So separate us from these defiant people."
He said, "Then it is forbidden to them for forty years. They will wander lost in the land. So do not grieve over these defiant people."
Recite to them the story of Adam's two sons in truth: when they both offered a sacrifice, it was accepted from one of them but not from the other. He said, "I will kill you." He replied, "God only accepts from those who are mindful of Him."
"If you raise your hand to kill me, I will not raise my hand to kill you. I fear God, Lord of all the worlds."
"I want you to bear my sin and your sin, and become one of the companions of the Fire. That is the reward of the wrongdoers."
His soul drove him to kill his brother, so he killed him and became one of the losers.
Then God sent a crow scratching in the ground to show him how to bury his brother's corpse. He said, "Woe to me! Am I too helpless to be like this crow and bury my brother's corpse?" And he became filled with regret.
Because of that, We decreed upon the Children of Israel that whoever kills a soul, not in retaliation for a soul or for corruption in the land, it is as if he killed all of humanity. And whoever saves a life, it is as if he saved all of humanity. Our messengers came to them with clear proofs, yet many of them continued to commit excess in the land.
The penalty for those who wage war against God and His Messenger and spread corruption in the land is death, or crucifixion, or the amputation of their hands and feet on opposite sides, or exile from the land. That is their disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter they will have a tremendous punishment.
Except for those who repent before you overpower them. Know that God is Forgiving, Merciful.
O you who believe, be mindful of God and seek the means of drawing near to Him, and strive in His cause so that you may succeed.
Those who disbelieve, even if they possessed everything on earth and twice as much to ransom themselves from the punishment of the Day of Resurrection, it would not be accepted from them. They will have a painful punishment.
They will want to escape from the Fire, but they will never escape it. They will have an everlasting punishment.
The male thief and the female thief: cut off their hands as a penalty for what they have committed, a deterrent from God. God is Almighty, Wise.
Whoever repents after their wrongdoing and reforms, God will turn to them in forgiveness. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth? He punishes whom He wills and forgives whom He wills. God has power over all things.
O Messenger, do not let those who rush into disbelief grieve you, those who say "We believe" with their mouths while their hearts do not believe, and those among the Jews who listen eagerly to lies and listen for other people who have not come to you. They distort words from their proper places, saying, "If you are given this, accept it, but if you are not given it, beware." Whoever God wills to be tested, you have no power to help him against God at all. Those are the ones whose hearts God did not will to purify. For them is disgrace in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is a tremendous punishment.
They listen eagerly to lies and devour unlawful gains. If they come to you, judge between them or turn away from them. If you turn away from them, they cannot harm you at all. But if you judge, judge between them with justice. God loves those who are just.
How can they ask you to judge when they have the Torah containing God's judgment? Then they turn away after that. Those are not believers.
We sent down the Torah containing guidance and light. The prophets who submitted to God judged by it for the Jews, as did the rabbis and scholars, according to what they were entrusted to preserve of God's Book, and they were witnesses over it. So do not fear people, but fear Me, and do not sell My verses for a small price. Whoever does not judge by what God has sent down, those are the disbelievers.
We prescribed for them in it: a life for a life, an eye for an eye, a nose for a nose, an ear for an ear, a tooth for a tooth, and for wounds equal retaliation. But whoever forgives it as charity, it will be atonement for him. Whoever does not judge by what God has sent down, those are the wrongdoers.
We sent Jesus son of Mary following in their footsteps, confirming the Torah that came before him. We gave him the Gospel containing guidance and light, confirming the Torah that came before it, and as guidance and counsel for those who are mindful of God.
Let the people of the Gospel judge by what God has sent down in it. Whoever does not judge by what God has sent down, those are the rebellious.
We have sent down to you the Book with the truth, confirming the scriptures that came before it and as a guardian over them. So judge between them by what God has sent down, and do not follow their desires away from the truth that has come to you. For each of you We have appointed a law and a path. Had God willed, He would have made you one nation, but He tests you through what He has given you. So race toward good deeds. To God you will all return, and He will inform you about what you used to differ over.
Judge between them by what God has sent down, and do not follow their desires. Beware of them lest they tempt you away from some of what God has sent down to you. If they turn away, know that God only wants to strike them for some of their sins. Many people are rebellious.
Is it the judgment of ignorance they seek? Who is better than God in judgment for people who are certain?
O you who believe, do not take the Jews and Christians as allies. They are allies of one another. Whoever among you allies with them becomes one of them. God does not guide wrongdoing people.
You see those with sickness in their hearts rushing toward them, saying, "We fear a turn of fortune may strike us." But perhaps God will bring victory or a command from Him, and they will wake up regretting what they concealed within themselves.
Those who believe will say, "Are these the ones who swore by God with their strongest oaths that they were with you?" Their deeds have come to nothing, and they have become losers.
O you who believe, whoever among you turns back from his religion, God will bring a people He loves and who love Him, humble toward the believers, mighty against the disbelievers, striving in the way of God, never fearing the blame of any critic. That is the grace of God which He gives to whom He wills. God is Vast, All-Knowing.
Your ally is God, His Messenger, and those who believe, who establish prayer and give charity while they bow in worship.
Whoever allies with God, His Messenger, and those who believe, then the party of God will be victorious.
O you who believe, do not take as allies those who mock and ridicule your religion from among those who were given the Scripture before you and the disbelievers. Be mindful of God if you are believers.
When you call to prayer, they take it as mockery and amusement. That is because they are a people who do not reason.
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do you resent us for anything other than that we believe in God, in what was sent down to us, and in what was sent down before, and that most of you are defiantly disobedient?"
Say, "Shall I tell you of something worse than that as a reward from God? Those whom God has cursed and with whom He became angry, and He made some of them apes and pigs, and who worshiped false gods. Those are worse in position and further astray from the straight path."
When they come to you, they say, "We believe," but they entered with disbelief and they left with it. God knows best what they were hiding.
You see many of them rushing into sin, aggression, and consuming forbidden gains. How wretched is what they have been doing.
Why do the rabbis and scholars not forbid them from sinful speech and consuming forbidden gains? How wretched is what they have been doing.
The Jews said, "God's Hand is chained." May their hands be chained, and may they be cursed for what they said. No, His Hands are wide open, spending as He wills. What has been sent down to you from your Lord will only increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. We have cast enmity and hatred among them until the Day of Resurrection. Every time they kindle a fire for war, God extinguishes it. They strive to spread corruption on earth, and God does not love the corrupters.
If only the People of the Scripture had believed and been mindful of God, We would have erased their sins and admitted them into Gardens of Bliss.
If only they had upheld the Torah and the Gospel and what was sent down to them from their Lord, they would have eaten from above them and from beneath their feet. Among them is a moderate community, but many of them do evil.
O Messenger, deliver what has been sent down to you from your Lord. If you do not, then you have not delivered His message. God will protect you from the people. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
Say, "O People of the Scripture, you stand on nothing until you uphold the Torah and the Gospel and what has been sent down to you from your Lord." What has been sent down to you from your Lord will only increase many of them in rebellion and disbelief. So do not grieve over the disbelieving people.
Those who believe, the Jews, the Sabians, and the Christians, whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good, no fear will be upon them, nor will they grieve.
We took a covenant from the Children of Israel and sent messengers to them. Whenever a messenger came to them with what their souls did not desire, some they denied and some they killed.
They assumed there would be no trial, so they became blind and deaf. Then God turned to them in mercy, yet again many of them became blind and deaf. God sees what they do.
Those who say, "God is the Messiah, son of Mary," have certainly disbelieved. The Messiah himself said, "O Children of Israel, worship God, my Lord and your Lord." Whoever associates partners with God, God has forbidden Paradise to him, and his refuge is the Fire. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.
Those who say, "God is the third of three," have certainly disbelieved. There is no god but One God. If they do not stop what they are saying, a painful punishment will strike those among them who disbelieve.
Will they not turn to God in repentance and seek His forgiveness? God is Forgiving, Merciful.
The Messiah, son of Mary, was only a messenger; messengers had passed away before him. His mother was a woman of truth. They both ate food. See how We make the signs clear to them, then see how they are deluded.
Say, "Do you worship besides God what has no power to harm or benefit you? God is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
Say, "O People of the Scripture, do not go to extremes in your religion beyond the truth, and do not follow the desires of a people who went astray before, led many astray, and strayed from the right path."
Those who disbelieved among the Children of Israel were cursed by the tongue of David and Jesus, son of Mary. That was because they disobeyed and used to transgress.
They would not forbid one another from the evil they committed. How wretched was what they used to do.
You see many of them allying with those who disbelieve. How wretched is what their souls have sent ahead for them: God's wrath is upon them, and in the punishment they will remain forever.
Had they believed in God, the Prophet, and what was revealed to him, they would not have taken them as allies. But many of them are defiantly disobedient.
You will surely find the most hostile people toward the believers to be the Jews and the polytheists. You will find the closest in affection to the believers to be those who say, "We are Christians." That is because among them are priests and monks, and they are not arrogant.
When they hear what has been sent down to the Messenger, you see their eyes overflowing with tears because of the truth they recognize. They say, "Our Lord, we believe, so record us among the witnesses."
Why should we not believe in God and the truth that has come to us, when we hope that our Lord will admit us among the righteous people?
So God rewarded them for what they said with gardens beneath which rivers flow, where they will remain forever. That is the reward of those who do good.
Those who disbelieve and deny Our signs, they are the companions of Hell.
O you who believe, do not forbid the good things that God has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. God does not love the transgressors.
Eat from the lawful and good things God has provided for you, and be mindful of God, in whom you believe.
God does not hold you accountable for thoughtless oaths, but He holds you accountable for oaths you have sworn deliberately. The expiation for breaking such an oath is feeding ten needy people from the average of what you feed your own families, or clothing them, or freeing a slave. Whoever cannot find the means must fast three days. That is the expiation for your oaths when you have sworn them. Guard your oaths. This is how God makes His signs clear to you, so that you may be grateful.
O you who believe, intoxicants, gambling, stone altars, and divining arrows are filth from the work of Satan, so avoid them so that you may succeed.
Satan only wants to sow enmity and hatred among you through intoxicants and gambling, and to turn you away from the remembrance of God and from prayer. Will you not then stop?
Obey God and obey the Messenger, and beware. If you turn away, know that Our Messenger's only duty is clear delivery of the message.
There is no blame on those who believe and do good deeds for what they consumed, as long as they are mindful of God and believe and do good deeds, then remain mindful and believe, then remain mindful and do good. God loves those who do good.
O you who believe, God will surely test you with some game within reach of your hands and spears, so that God may know who fears Him in the unseen. Whoever transgresses after this will have a painful punishment.
O you who believe, do not kill game while you are in a state of pilgrimage. Whoever among you kills it intentionally, the penalty is an equivalent from livestock, as judged by two just men among you, to be delivered as an offering to the Kaaba, or an expiation of feeding the needy, or the equivalent of that in fasting, so that he may taste the consequence of his deed. God has pardoned what is past, but whoever returns to it, God will take vengeance on him. God is Almighty, capable of vengeance.
Lawful to you is the game of the sea and its food as provision for you and for travelers, but forbidden to you is the game of the land as long as you are in a state of pilgrimage. Be mindful of God, to whom you will be gathered.
God has made the Kaaba, the Sacred House, a sanctuary for people, and the sacred month, and the sacrificial offerings, and the garlanded animals. This is so you may know that God knows what is in the heavens and what is on the earth, and that God has knowledge of all things.
Know that God is severe in punishment and that God is Forgiving, Merciful.
The Messenger's only duty is to deliver the message. God knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
Say, "The corrupt and the good are not equal, even if the abundance of the corrupt impresses you." So be mindful of God, O people of understanding, that you may succeed.
O you who believe, do not ask about things that, if made clear to you, would trouble you. But if you ask about them while the Quran is being revealed, they will be made clear to you. God has pardoned them. God is Forgiving, Forbearing.
A people before you asked such questions, then became disbelievers because of them.
God has not instituted any Bahira, nor Saiba, nor Wasila, nor Ham. But those who disbelieve fabricate lies against God, and most of them do not reason.
When it is said to them, "Come to what God has revealed and to the Messenger," they say, "Sufficient for us is what we found our fathers upon." Even if their fathers knew nothing and were not guided?
O you who believe, you are responsible for your own souls. Those who stray cannot harm you if you are guided. To God is your return, all of you, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
O you who believe, when death approaches one of you at the time of making a bequest, let two just men from among you serve as witnesses, or two others from outside your community if you are traveling through the land and the calamity of death strikes you. Detain them after the prayer, and if you have doubts, let them swear by God: "We will not sell our testimony for any price, even if it concerns a relative, and we will not conceal the testimony of God, for then we would be among the sinners."
If it is discovered that those two were guilty of sin, then let two others from among those whose rights were violated take their place, and let them swear by God: "Our testimony is truer than theirs, and we have not transgressed, for then we would be among the wrongdoers."
This makes it more likely that they will give honest testimony, or fear that their oaths will be contradicted by other oaths. Be mindful of God and listen. God does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
On the Day when God gathers the messengers and asks, "What response did you receive?" They will say, "We have no knowledge. You alone are the Knower of all that is hidden."
God said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, remember My favor upon you and upon your mother: when I strengthened you with the Holy Spirit, so you spoke to people in the cradle and in maturity; when I taught you the Book and wisdom, the Torah and the Gospel; when you shaped from clay the form of a bird by My permission, then breathed into it and it became a bird by My permission; when you healed the blind and the leper by My permission; when you raised the dead by My permission; when I restrained the Children of Israel from you when you came to them with clear proofs, and those who disbelieved among them said, 'This is nothing but obvious magic.'"
When I inspired the disciples, "Believe in Me and in My messenger," they said, "We believe, and bear witness that we submit."
The disciples said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, can your Lord send down to us a table spread from heaven?" He said, "Be mindful of God, if you are believers."
They said, "We want to eat from it, and let our hearts be reassured, and know that you have told us the truth, and be witnesses to it."
Jesus, son of Mary, said, "O God, our Lord, send down to us a table spread from heaven, to be a feast for us, for the first of us and the last of us, and a sign from You. Provide for us, for You are the best of providers."
God said, "I will send it down to you. But whoever among you disbelieves after that, I will punish him with a punishment I have not inflicted on anyone in all the worlds."
God said, "O Jesus, son of Mary, did you tell people, 'Take me and my mother as two gods besides God'?" He said, "Glory be to You! It is not for me to say what I have no right to say. If I had said it, You would have known it. You know what is within me, but I do not know what is within You. You alone are the Knower of the unseen."
I told them only what You commanded me: "Worship God, my Lord and your Lord." I was a witness over them as long as I was among them. But when You took me, You were the Watcher over them. You are Witness over all things.
If You punish them, they are Your servants. If You forgive them, You are the Almighty, the Wise.
God said, "This is the Day when the truthful will benefit from their truthfulness. For them are gardens with rivers flowing beneath, dwelling there forever. God is pleased with them, and they are pleased with Him. That is the supreme triumph."
To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and everything in them. He has power over all things.
