Surah “Exile, Banishment”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 24 verses

Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies God. He is the Almighty, the Wise.
He is the One who expelled those who disbelieved among the People of the Scripture from their homes at the first gathering. You never thought they would leave, and they thought their fortresses would protect them from God. But God came at them from where they never expected and cast terror into their hearts. They demolished their own houses with their own hands and the hands of the believers. So take heed, you who have insight.
Had God not decreed exile for them, He would have punished them in this world, and in the Hereafter they will have the punishment of the Fire.
That is because they opposed God and His Messenger, and whoever opposes God, God is severe in punishment.
Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing on their roots, it was by God's permission and to disgrace the rebellious.
Whatever God restored to His Messenger from them, you did not drive horses or camels for it. But God gives His messengers authority over whomever He wills. God has power over all things.
Whatever God restored to His Messenger from the people of the towns belongs to God, to the Messenger, to relatives, to orphans, to the needy, and to the traveler, so that it does not circulate only among the wealthy among you. Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it, and whatever he forbids you, abstain from it. Be mindful of God. God is severe in punishment.
It is for the poor emigrants who were expelled from their homes and their wealth, seeking grace from God and His pleasure, and supporting God and His Messenger. Those are the truthful.
Those who established the homeland and faith before them love those who emigrated to them and find no desire in their hearts for what was given to them. They give preference over themselves even when they are in need. Whoever is protected from the greed of their own soul, those are the successful.
Those who came after them say, "Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who preceded us in faith, and do not place in our hearts any resentment toward those who believe. Our Lord, You are Kind, Merciful."
Have you not seen those who practice hypocrisy? They say to their brothers among the People of the Scripture who disbelieved, "If you are expelled, we will leave with you, and we will never obey anyone against you. If you are fought, we will help you." But God bears witness that they are liars.
If they are expelled, they will not leave with them. If they are fought, they will not help them. Even if they were to help them, they would turn their backs and flee, then they would receive no help.
You strike more fear in their hearts than God does. That is because they are a people who do not understand.
They will not fight you all together except from within fortified towns or from behind walls. Their hostility among themselves is fierce. You think they are united, but their hearts are divided. That is because they are a people who do not reason.
Like those who came shortly before them, they tasted the consequence of their actions, and a painful punishment awaits them.
Like Satan when he said to man, "Disbelieve!" But when he disbelieved, he said, "I have nothing to do with you. I fear God, Lord of all worlds."
The end for both of them is that they will be in the Fire, dwelling there forever. That is the reward of the wrongdoers.
O you who believe, be mindful of God, and let every soul consider what it has sent ahead for tomorrow. Be mindful of God, for God is fully aware of everything you do.
Do not be like those who forgot God, so He made them forget themselves. Those are the defiantly disobedient.
The people of Hell and the people of Paradise are not equal. The people of Paradise are the triumphant.
Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled, splitting apart from awe of God. These are the parables We set forth for people so that they might reflect.
He is God, there is no god but Him, Knower of the unseen and the seen. He is the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
He is God, there is no god but Him, the King, the Holy, the Peace, the Granter of Security, the Guardian, the Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme. Glory be to God, far above what they associate with Him.
He is God, the Creator, the Originator, the Shaper. To Him belong the most beautiful names. Everything in the heavens and the earth glorifies Him, and He is the Almighty, the Wise.
