Alif Lam Mim.
This is the Book in which there is no doubt, a guide for those who are mindful of God.
Those who believe in the unseen, establish prayer, and spend from what We have provided them.
Those who believe in what has been sent down to you and what was sent down before you, and who are certain of the Hereafter.
These are on guidance from their Lord, and these are the successful.
Those who disbelieve, it is the same to them whether you warn them or do not warn them: they will not believe.
God has sealed their hearts and their hearing, and over their eyes is a veil. For them is a tremendous punishment.
Among people are those who say, "We believe in God and the Last Day," but they are not believers.
They try to deceive God and those who believe, but they only deceive themselves without realizing it.
In their hearts is a disease, so God has increased their disease. For them is a painful punishment because they used to lie.
When they are told, "Do not spread corruption on earth," they say, "We are only reformers."
They are the corrupters, but they do not realize it.
When they are told, "Believe as the people have believed," they say, "Should we believe as the fools have believed?" They are the fools, but they do not know.
When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone with their devils, they say, "We are with you. We were only mocking."
God mocks them and leaves them wandering blindly in their rebellion.
These are the ones who bought error in exchange for guidance. Their trade brought no profit, and they were not guided.
Their likeness is that of one who kindled a fire, and when it lit up what was around him, God took away their light and left them in darkness, unable to see.
Deaf, mute, and blind, they will not return.
Or like a rainstorm from the sky, full of darkness, thunder, and lightning. They press their fingers into their ears against the thunderbolts, fearing death. God surrounds the disbelievers.
The lightning nearly snatches away their sight. Whenever it flashes for them, they walk in it, and when darkness falls upon them, they stand still. If God willed, He could take away their hearing and their sight. God has power over all things.
O people, worship your Lord who created you and those before you, so that you may be mindful of Him.
He made the earth a resting place for you and the sky a canopy, and sent down rain from the sky, bringing forth fruits as provision for you. So do not set up rivals to God when you know better.
If you are in doubt about what We have sent down to Our servant, then produce a chapter like it and call upon your witnesses besides God, if you are truthful.
But if you cannot, and you never will, then beware the Fire whose fuel is people and stones, prepared for the disbelievers.
Give good news to those who believe and do righteous deeds: they will have gardens with rivers flowing beneath them. Whenever they are given fruit from there as provision, they will say, "This is what we were given before," for they will be given things alike in appearance. They will have purified spouses there, and they will dwell there forever.
God does not shy away from drawing a comparison to a mosquito or something even smaller. Those who believe know it is the truth from their Lord, but those who disbelieve say, "What does God mean by this comparison?" He leads many astray by it and guides many by it, but He only leads astray the rebellious.
Those who break God's covenant after it has been affirmed, who sever what God has commanded to be joined, and who spread corruption on earth: they are the losers.
How can you deny God when you were lifeless and He gave you life? Then He will cause you to die, then bring you back to life, then to Him you will be returned.
He is the One who created for you everything on earth, then turned to the sky and formed it into seven heavens. He has knowledge of all things.
When your Lord said to the angels, "I am placing a successor on the earth," they said, "Will You place on it one who will spread corruption and shed blood, while we glorify Your praise and declare Your holiness?" He said, "I know what you do not know."
He taught Adam the names of all things, then presented them to the angels and said, "Tell Me the names of these, if you are truthful."
They said, "Glory be to You! We have no knowledge except what You have taught us. You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise."
He said, "O Adam, tell them their names." When he told them their names, He said, "Did I not tell you that I know the unseen of the heavens and the earth, and I know what you reveal and what you have been concealing?"
When We said to the angels, "Prostrate before Adam," they all prostrated except Iblis. He refused and was arrogant, and he was among the disbelievers.
We said, "O Adam, dwell with your wife in Paradise and eat freely from it wherever you wish, but do not approach this tree, or you will be among the wrongdoers."
But Satan caused them to slip from it and removed them from what they had been in. We said, "Go down, enemies to one another. On earth you will have a dwelling place and provision for a time."
Then Adam received words from his Lord, and He accepted his repentance. He is the Ever-Accepting of repentance, the Most Merciful.
We said, "Go down from it, all of you. Whenever guidance comes to you from Me, whoever follows My guidance will have no fear, nor will they grieve."
But those who disbelieve and deny Our signs, they are the companions of the Fire. They will remain in it forever.
O Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you. Fulfill your covenant with Me, and I will fulfill My covenant with you. And fear Me alone.
Believe in what I have sent down, confirming what is already with you, and do not be the first to reject it. Do not sell My verses for a cheap price. And be mindful of Me alone.
Do not mix truth with falsehood, and do not hide the truth when you know it.
Establish prayer, give charity, and bow down with those who bow.
Do you command people to righteousness while forgetting yourselves, even as you recite the Scripture? Will you not reason?
Seek help through patience and prayer. It is difficult, except for the humble.
Those who know they will meet their Lord and that to Him they will return.
O Children of Israel, remember My blessing that I bestowed upon you, and that I favored you over all peoples.
Guard yourselves against a Day when no soul will help another in the least, when no intercession will be accepted from it, no ransom taken from it, and they will not be helped.
Remember when We saved you from Pharaoh's people, who were inflicting terrible torment on you: slaughtering your sons and sparing your women. In that was a tremendous trial from your Lord.
Remember when We parted the sea for you, saved you, and drowned Pharaoh's people as you watched.
Remember when We appointed forty nights for Moses, then you took the calf after he left, and you were wrongdoers.
Then We pardoned you after that, so that you might be grateful.
We gave Moses the Book and the Criterion so that you might be guided.
Moses said to his people, "My people, you have wronged yourselves by taking the calf. Turn in repentance to your Creator and kill yourselves. That is better for you in the sight of your Creator." Then He accepted your repentance. He is the Ever-Accepting, the Merciful.
You said, "Moses, we will never believe you until we see God openly." So the thunderbolt struck you while you watched.
Then We raised you up after your death so that you might be grateful.
We shaded you with clouds and sent down manna and quails upon you. Eat from the good things We have provided for you. They did not wrong Us, but they wronged themselves.
We said, "Enter this town and eat freely from it wherever you wish. Enter the gate bowing down and say, 'Relieve us of our burden,' and We will forgive your sins. We will give more to those who do good."
But the wrongdoers changed the words to something other than what they were told. So We sent down a plague from the sky upon the wrongdoers because of their defiance.
Moses prayed for water for his people, so We said, "Strike the rock with your staff." Twelve springs gushed forth from it, and each tribe knew its drinking place. Eat and drink from God's provision, and do not spread corruption in the land.
You said, "Moses, we cannot endure one kind of food. Call upon your Lord to bring forth for us what the earth grows: its herbs, cucumbers, garlic, lentils, and onions." He said, "Would you exchange what is better for what is lesser? Go down to any town, and you will have what you asked for." Humiliation and poverty were stamped upon them, and they drew God's wrath upon themselves. That was because they rejected God's verses and killed the prophets without right. That was because they disobeyed and transgressed.
Those who believe, the Jews, the Christians, and the Sabians, whoever believes in God and the Last Day and does good will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.
We took your covenant and raised the mountain above you: "Hold firmly to what We have given you and remember what is in it, so that you may be mindful."
Then you turned away after that. Were it not for God's grace and mercy upon you, you would have been among the losers.
You already know those among you who violated the Sabbath. We said to them, "Be despised apes."
We made this a deterrent for their generation and those after them, and a lesson for those who are mindful of God.
When Moses said to his people, "God commands you to slaughter a cow," they said, "Are you mocking us?" He said, "I seek refuge in God from being among the ignorant."
They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to clarify what it should be." He said, "He says it should be a cow neither old nor young, but middle-aged between the two. So do what you are commanded."
They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to clarify its color." He said, "He says it should be a bright yellow cow, vivid in color, pleasing to those who see it."
They said, "Call upon your Lord for us to clarify what it should be, for cows all look alike to us. If God wills, we will be guided."
He said, "He says it should be a cow not trained to plow the earth or water the fields, unblemished with no markings on it." They said, "Now you have brought the truth." So they slaughtered it, though they nearly failed to do so.
When you killed a man and disputed over it, God brought out what you were concealing.
We said, "Strike him with a piece of it." This is how God brings the dead to life and shows you His signs, so that you may understand.
Then your hearts hardened after that, becoming like stones or even harder. For there are stones from which rivers burst forth, and there are some that split open and water flows from them, and there are some that fall down in awe of God. God is not unaware of what you do.
Do you hope that they will believe you when a group of them used to hear the words of God, then deliberately distort them after they had understood them?
When they meet those who believe, they say, "We believe." But when they are alone with one another, they say, "Will you tell them what God has revealed to you so they can argue against you before your Lord? Do you not understand?"
Do they not know that God knows what they conceal and what they reveal?
Among them are the unlettered who know nothing of the Scripture except wishful thinking, and they only speculate.
So woe to those who write the Scripture with their own hands then say, "This is from God," to sell it for a small price. Woe to them for what their hands have written, and woe to them for what they earn.
They say, "The Fire will only touch us for a limited number of days." Say, "Have you taken a promise from God, for God never breaks His promise? Or do you say about God what you do not know?"
Yes, whoever commits evil and is engulfed by their sin, those are the companions of the Fire, dwelling there forever.
Those who believe and do righteous deeds, those are the companions of Paradise, dwelling there forever.
We took a covenant from the Children of Israel: worship none but God, be good to your parents, to relatives, to orphans, and to the needy, speak kindly to people, establish prayer, and give charity. Then you turned away, except for a few of you, and you were resistant.
We took your covenant: you shall not shed each other's blood or expel one another from your homes. Then you acknowledged this, and you yourselves bear witness.
Yet here you are, killing one another and expelling a group of your own from their homes, backing each other against them in sin and aggression. If they come to you as captives, you ransom them, though their expulsion was forbidden to you. Do you believe in part of the Scripture and reject the rest? The only reward for those among you who do this is disgrace in this life, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be driven to the harshest punishment. God is not unaware of what you do.
Those are the ones who have traded the Hereafter for this life. Their punishment will not be lightened, nor will they be helped.
We gave Moses the Scripture and sent messengers after him in succession. We gave Jesus son of Mary clear signs and strengthened him with the Holy Spirit. Is it that whenever a messenger comes to you with what your souls do not desire, you grow arrogant? Some you denied, and some you killed.
They say, "Our hearts are wrapped." No, God has cursed them for their disbelief, so little do they believe.
When a Book came to them from God confirming what they already had, and they used to pray for victory over the disbelievers, yet when there came to them what they recognized, they rejected it. So the curse of God is upon the disbelievers.
Wretched is what they sold their souls for: rejecting what God has sent down out of envy that God would send His grace upon whomever He wills of His servants. So they brought upon themselves wrath upon wrath, and for the disbelievers is a humiliating punishment.
When they are told, "Believe in what God has sent down," they say, "We believe in what was sent down to us," and they reject what came after it, even though it is the truth confirming what they have. Say, "Then why did you kill the prophets of God before, if you were believers?"
Moses came to you with clear signs, yet you took the calf after him, and you were wrongdoers.
When We took your covenant and raised the mountain above you: "Hold firmly to what We have given you and listen." They said, "We hear and we disobey." Their hearts were made to absorb the calf because of their disbelief. Say, "How wretched is what your faith commands you, if you are believers."
Say, "If the home of the Hereafter with God is yours alone, excluding all other people, then wish for death if you are truthful."
But they will never wish for it because of what their hands have sent ahead. God knows well the wrongdoers.
You will find them the greediest of people for life, even more than the polytheists. Each one of them wishes to live a thousand years, but a long life would not spare him from the punishment. God sees all that they do.
Say, "Whoever is an enemy to Gabriel, it was he who brought it down upon your heart by God's permission, confirming what came before it, and as guidance and good news for the believers."
Whoever is an enemy to God, His angels, His messengers, Gabriel, and Michael, then God is an enemy to the disbelievers.
We have sent down to you clear verses, and none reject them except the defiantly disobedient.
Is it not that whenever they made a covenant, a group among them threw it aside? The truth is, most of them do not believe.
When a messenger from God came to them confirming what they already had, a group of those who were given the Scripture tossed God's Book behind their backs as if they did not know.
They followed what the devils recited during Solomon's reign. Solomon did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved, teaching people magic and what was sent down to the two angels in Babylon, Harut and Marut. These two would not teach anyone without first warning, "We are only a test, so do not disbelieve." Yet people learned from them how to cause separation between a man and his wife. But they could not harm anyone with it except by God's permission. They learned what harmed them and did not benefit them. They knew full well that whoever purchased it would have no share in the Hereafter. Miserable is what they sold their souls for, if only they knew.
Had they believed and been mindful of God, a reward from God would have been far better, if only they knew.
O you who believe, do not say "Ra'ina" but say "Unzurna" and listen. For the disbelievers there is a painful punishment.
Neither the disbelievers among the People of the Scripture nor the polytheists wish for any good to be sent down to you from your Lord. But God singles out for His mercy whoever He wills, and God is the possessor of immense favor.
Whatever verse We abrogate or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that God has power over all things?
Do you not know that to God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and that you have no protector or helper besides God?
Or do you want to question your Messenger as Moses was questioned before? Whoever trades faith for disbelief has strayed from the right path.
Many of the People of the Scripture wish they could turn you back to disbelief after you have believed, out of envy from within themselves, even after the truth has become clear to them. So pardon and overlook until God brings His command. God has power over all things.
Establish prayer and give charity. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves, you will find it with God. God sees everything you do.
They say, "No one will enter Paradise except Jews or Christians." These are their wishful fantasies. Say, "Bring your proof if you are truthful."
No, whoever surrenders his face to God while doing good will have his reward with his Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
The Jews say, "The Christians have no ground to stand on," and the Christians say, "The Jews have no ground to stand on," yet they both read the Scripture. Those who have no knowledge say the same things. God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection concerning what they used to dispute.
Who is more unjust than those who prevent God's houses of worship from having His name remembered in them and strive for their ruin? Such people should not enter them except in fear. For them is disgrace in this world, and in the Hereafter a tremendous punishment.
To God belong the East and the West. Wherever you turn, there is the Face of God. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing.
They say, "God has taken a son." Glory be to Him! Rather, to Him belongs everything in the heavens and the earth. All are devoutly obedient to Him.
Originator of the heavens and the earth, when He decrees a matter, He only says to it, "Be," and it is.
Those who have no knowledge say, "Why does God not speak to us, or a sign come to us?" Those before them said the same things. Their hearts are alike. We have made the verses clear for people who have certainty.
We have sent you with the truth as a bearer of good news and a warner. You will not be asked about the companions of the Blaze.
The Jews will never be pleased with you, nor will the Christians, until you follow their way. Say, "God's guidance is the true guidance." If you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you will have no protector or helper against God.
Those to whom We have given the Scripture, who recite it as it should be recited, they believe in it. Whoever rejects it, those are the losers.
O Children of Israel, remember My favor that I bestowed upon you, and that I preferred you over all peoples.
Fear a Day when no soul will avail another in the least, no ransom will be accepted from it, no intercession will benefit it, and they will not be helped.
When his Lord tested Abraham with certain commands and he fulfilled them, He said, "I am making you a leader for humanity." Abraham asked, "And from my descendants?" He said, "My covenant does not extend to the wrongdoers."
We made the House a place of return for people and a sanctuary. Take the station of Abraham as a place of prayer. We commanded Abraham and Ishmael: purify My House for those who circle it, those who stay there in devotion, and those who bow and prostrate.
Abraham said, "My Lord, make this a secure city and provide its people with fruits, those of them who believe in God and the Last Day." He said, "As for the one who disbelieves, I will let him enjoy himself for a little while, then I will drive him to the punishment of the Fire, and what a miserable destination."
As Abraham and Ishmael raised the foundations of the House, they prayed, "Our Lord, accept this from us. You are the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing."
Our Lord, make us both submissive to You, and from our descendants a nation submissive to You. Show us our rites of worship and turn to us in mercy. You are the Ever-Relenting, the Most Merciful.
Our Lord, raise among them a messenger from themselves who will recite Your revelations to them, teach them the Book and wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the All-Wise.
Who would turn away from the creed of Abraham except one who fools himself? We chose him in this world, and in the Hereafter he will be among the righteous.
When his Lord said to him, "Submit," he said, "I have submitted to the Lord of all worlds."
Abraham charged his sons with this, as did Jacob: "My sons, God has chosen this faith for you, so do not die except in submission to Him."
Were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, "What will you worship after me?" They said, "We will worship your God and the God of your fathers Abraham, Ishmael, and Isaac, one God, and to Him we are submissive."
That was a nation that has passed away. They have what they earned, and you have what you earned. You will not be asked about what they used to do.
They say, "Become Jews or Christians and you will be guided." Say, "Rather, the way of Abraham, the upright, and he was not among those who associated others with God."
Say, "We believe in God and what has been sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit."
If they believe in the same as what you believe in, then they are guided. But if they turn away, they are only in opposition. God will be enough for you against them, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
The color of God! Who is better than God in coloring? And we are worshipers of Him.
Say, "Do you argue with us about God when He is our Lord and your Lord? We have our deeds and you have your deeds, and we are devoted to Him."
Or do you claim that Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, "Do you know better, or does God?" Who is more unjust than one who conceals a testimony he has from God? God is not unaware of what you do.
That was a community that has passed away. They have what they acquired, and you have what you acquired. You will not be asked about what they used to do.
The foolish among the people will say, "What has turned them away from the direction they used to face?" Say, "To God belong the east and the west. He guides whom He wills to a straight path."
Thus We have made you a middle community, so that you may be witnesses over humanity, and the Messenger may be a witness over you. We did not appoint the direction you formerly faced except to distinguish those who follow the Messenger from those who turn back on their heels. It was difficult except for those whom God has guided. God would never let your faith go to waste. God is truly compassionate and merciful toward people.
We have seen your face turning toward the sky. So We will turn you toward a direction that pleases you. Turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces toward it. Those who were given the Scripture know that this is the truth from their Lord. God is not unaware of what they do.
Even if you brought every verse to those who were given the Scripture, they would not follow your direction. Nor will you follow their direction. Nor will they follow each other's direction. If you were to follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, then you would be among the wrongdoers.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture recognize him as they recognize their own sons, yet a group of them knowingly conceal the truth.
The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.
Everyone has a direction they turn to, so race toward good deeds. Wherever you may be, God will bring you all together. God has power over all things.
From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. This is the truth from your Lord, and God is not unaware of what you do.
From wherever you set out, turn your face toward the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you may be, turn your faces toward it, so that people will have no argument against you, except those among them who do wrong. Do not fear them, but fear Me, so that I may complete My blessing upon you and so that you may be guided.
Just as We sent among you a messenger from yourselves, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Scripture and wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.
So remember Me, and I will remember you. Be grateful to Me and do not deny Me.
O you who believe, seek help through patience and prayer. God is with the patient.
Do not say of those who are killed in the way of God that they are dead. They are alive, but you do not perceive it.
We will surely test you with something of fear, hunger, loss of wealth, lives, and crops. Give good news to the patient.
Those who, when disaster strikes them, say, "We belong to God, and to Him we return."
Upon them are blessings from their Lord and mercy, and they are the rightly guided.
Safa and Marwa are among the rites of God. So whoever makes Pilgrimage to the House or performs the lesser pilgrimage, there is no blame on him for walking between them. And whoever does good voluntarily, God is Appreciative, All-Knowing.
Those who conceal what We have sent down of clear proofs and guidance after We made it clear to people in the Scripture, God curses them, and so do all who curse.
Except those who repent, make amends, and clarify the truth. Those I will accept their repentance, for I am the Ever-Accepting of Repentance, the Merciful.
Those who disbelieve and die as disbelievers, upon them is the curse of God, the angels, and all of humanity.
They will remain in it forever. The punishment will not be lightened for them, nor will they be given respite.
Your God is one God. There is no god but Him, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy.
In the creation of the heavens and the earth, the alternation of night and day, the ships that sail the sea with what benefits people, the water God sends down from the sky to revive the earth after its death and scatter throughout it every kind of creature, the shifting of the winds, and the clouds driven between sky and earth, there are signs for people who reason.
Yet some people take rivals besides God, loving them as they should love God. But those who believe love God more intensely. If only the wrongdoers could see, when they face the punishment, that all power belongs to God, and that God is severe in punishment.
When those who were followed will disown those who followed them, and they will see the punishment, and all ties between them will be severed.
Those who followed will say, "If only we could have another chance, we would disown them as they have disowned us." This is how God will show them their deeds as a source of bitter regret for them, and they will never escape the Fire.
O people, eat from what is lawful and good on earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is your clear enemy.
He only commands you to evil and indecency, and to say about God what you do not know.
When they are told, "Follow what God has sent down," they say, "No, we follow what we found our fathers doing." What! Even if their fathers understood nothing and were not guided?
The likeness of those who disbelieve is that of one who calls out to what hears nothing but shouts and cries: deaf, mute, and blind, so they do not understand.
O you who believe, eat from the good things We have provided for you and give thanks to God, if it is Him you worship.
He has only forbidden you carrion, blood, the flesh of swine, and what has been slaughtered in the name of other than God. But whoever is forced by necessity, neither craving nor exceeding need, there is no sin upon him. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
Those who conceal what God has sent down of the Book and sell it for a small price, they fill their bellies with nothing but Fire. God will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify them, and theirs is a painful punishment.
Those are the ones who have traded guidance for misguidance and forgiveness for punishment. How patient they are for the Fire!
That is because God sent down the Book with the truth, and those who differ about the Book are in extreme opposition.
Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but righteousness is to believe in God, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets; to give wealth despite loving it to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask, and for freeing slaves; to establish prayer and give charity; to keep promises when made; and to be patient in hardship, adversity, and times of conflict. Those are the ones who are truthful, and those are the ones who are mindful of God.
O you who believe, legal retribution is prescribed for you in cases of murder: the free for the free, the slave for the slave, the female for the female. But whoever is pardoned anything by his brother, let there be adherence to what is fair and payment to him with good conduct. This is a relief from your Lord and a mercy. Whoever transgresses after that will have a painful punishment.
In legal retribution there is life for you, O people of understanding, so that you may be mindful of God.
It is prescribed for you, when death approaches any of you and he leaves behind wealth, to make a bequest for parents and close relatives according to what is fair, a duty upon those who are mindful of God.
Whoever alters it after hearing it, the sin is only upon those who alter it. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
But whoever fears bias or wrongdoing from a testator and reconciles between the parties, there is no sin upon him. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
O you who believe, fasting has been prescribed for you as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become mindful of God.
For a limited number of days. Whoever among you is sick or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. Those who can barely endure it must pay a ransom: feeding a poor person. Whoever volunteers more good, it is better for him. But to fast is better for you, if only you knew.
The month of Ramadan is the one in which the Quran was sent down as guidance for humanity and clear proofs of guidance and the criterion. So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it. Whoever is sick or on a journey, then an equal number of other days. God intends ease for you and does not intend hardship for you, so that you may complete the count and glorify God for having guided you, and so that you may be grateful.
When My servants ask you about Me, I am near. I answer the call of the caller when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me and believe in Me, that they may be guided.
It has been made lawful for you to be intimate with your wives on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. God knew that you were betraying yourselves, so He turned to you and pardoned you. Now you may lie with them and seek what God has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct from the black thread. Then complete the fast until nightfall. But do not lie with them while you are in retreat in the mosques. These are the limits set by God, so do not approach them. This is how God makes His signs clear to people, so that they may be mindful of Him.
Do not consume one another's wealth unjustly, nor offer it as bribes to judges so you may knowingly devour a portion of other people's wealth through sin.
They ask you about the new moons. Say, "They are markers of time for people and for the Pilgrimage." Righteousness is not in entering houses from their backs, but righteousness is in being mindful of God. So enter houses through their doors, and be mindful of God so that you may succeed.
Fight in the way of God those who fight you, but do not transgress. God does not love transgressors.
Kill them wherever you encounter them and drive them out from where they drove you out, for persecution is worse than killing. Do not fight them at the Sacred Mosque unless they fight you there. But if they fight you, then kill them. Such is the reward of the disbelievers.
But if they cease, then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
Fight them until there is no more persecution and religion belongs to God. But if they cease, then let there be no hostility except against the wrongdoers.
The sacred month for the sacred month, and violations demand retaliation. Whoever transgresses against you, transgress against them in the same measure. Be mindful of God and know that God is with those who are mindful of Him.
Spend in the way of God and do not throw yourselves into destruction with your own hands. Do good, for God loves those who do good.
Complete the Pilgrimage and the lesser pilgrimage for God. If you are prevented, then offer whatever sacrifice you can afford. Do not shave your heads until the sacrifice reaches its destination. Whoever among you is ill or has an ailment of the head must compensate with fasting, charity, or ritual sacrifice. When you are secure, whoever enjoys the lesser pilgrimage followed by the Pilgrimage must offer whatever sacrifice they can afford. Whoever cannot find one must fast three days during the Pilgrimage and seven when you return, making ten in all. This applies to those whose families do not reside near the Sacred Mosque. Be mindful of God and know that God is severe in punishment.
The Pilgrimage takes place in appointed months. Whoever undertakes the Pilgrimage during them must abstain from sexual relations, wickedness, and quarreling during the Pilgrimage. Whatever good you do, God knows it. Take provisions, but the best provision is mindfulness of God. So be mindful of Me, O people of understanding.
There is no blame on you for seeking favor from your Lord. When you pour down from Arafat, remember God at the Sacred Monument. Remember Him as He guided you, though before this you were among the lost.
Then pour down from where the people pour down and seek God's forgiveness. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
When you have completed your rites, remember God as you remember your fathers, or with even greater remembrance. Among people are those who say, "Our Lord, give us in this world," and they will have no share in the Hereafter.
Among them are those who say, "Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire."
These will have a share of what they earned. God is swift in reckoning.
Remember God during the appointed days. Whoever hurries and leaves in two days commits no sin, and whoever stays longer commits no sin, for those who are mindful. Be mindful of God and know that you will be gathered before Him.
Among people is one whose speech about worldly life impresses you, and he calls God to witness what is in his heart, yet he is the fiercest of opponents.
When he turns away, he strives throughout the land to spread corruption and destroy crops and livestock. God does not love corruption.
When he is told, "Be mindful of God," pride in sin seizes him. Hell is enough for him, and what a wretched resting place.
Among people is one who sells his soul seeking God's pleasure. God is Compassionate toward His servants.
O you who believe, enter into peace wholeheartedly and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. He is your clear enemy.
If you slip after clear proofs have come to you, know that God is Almighty, Wise.
Are they waiting for God to come to them in canopies of clouds, along with the angels, and the matter to be settled? To God all matters return.
Ask the Children of Israel how many clear signs We gave them. Whoever trades away God's blessing after it has come to him, God is severe in punishment.
The life of this world has been made alluring to those who disbelieve, and they mock those who believe. But those who are mindful of God will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. God provides for whoever He wills without limit.
Humanity was one community, then God sent the prophets as bearers of good news and as warners. He sent down with them the Scripture in truth to judge between people in what they differed over. Yet none differed over it except those who received it, after clear proofs had come to them, out of rivalry among themselves. Then God guided those who believed to the truth they had differed over, by His permission. God guides whoever He wills to a straight path.
Do you think you will enter Paradise without experiencing what those before you faced? They were struck by hardship and suffering and shaken so severely that even the Messenger and those who believed with him cried out, "When will God's help come?" Know that God's help is near.
They ask you what they should spend. Say, "Whatever good you spend should be for parents, relatives, orphans, the needy, and the traveler. Whatever good you do, God knows it well."
Fighting has been prescribed for you, though you hate it. You may hate something that is good for you, and you may love something that is bad for you. God knows, and you do not know.
They ask you about fighting in the sacred month. Say, "Fighting in it is a grave offense, but blocking the path to God, denying Him, barring access to the Sacred Mosque, and driving out its people are greater offenses in God's sight. Persecution is worse than killing." They will not stop fighting you until they turn you away from your religion, if they can. Whoever among you turns back from their religion and dies as a disbeliever, their deeds will come to nothing in this world and the next. These are the inhabitants of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
Those who believed, emigrated, and struggled in God's path, they hope for God's mercy. God is Forgiving, Merciful.
They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, "In both there is great sin and some benefit for people, but their sin outweighs their benefit." They ask you what they should spend. Say, "The surplus." This is how God makes His verses clear to you, so that you may reflect.
On this world and the next. They ask you about orphans. Say, "Improving their condition is best. If you mix your affairs with theirs, they are your brothers." God knows the corrupter from the reformer. Had God willed, He could have made things difficult for you. God is Mighty, Wise.
Do not marry polytheist women until they believe. A believing slave woman is better than a polytheist woman, even if she attracts you. Do not give your women in marriage to polytheist men until they believe. A believing slave is better than a polytheist man, even if he attracts you. These invite to the Fire, while God invites you to Paradise and forgiveness by His permission. He makes His verses clear to people so that they may remember.
They ask you about menstruation. Say, "It is a discomfort, so keep away from women during menstruation and do not approach them until they are cleansed. Once they have purified themselves, come to them as God has commanded you." God loves those who turn back to Him, and He loves those who keep themselves pure.
Your wives are a field for you, so come to your field however you wish. Send forth good for yourselves, be mindful of God, and know that you will meet Him. Give good news to the believers.
Do not make God an excuse in your oaths to avoid doing good, being mindful of Him, and making peace between people. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
God does not hold you accountable for thoughtless oaths, but He holds you accountable for what your hearts have committed. God is Forgiving, Forbearing.
Those who swear to abstain from their wives must wait four months. If they return to them, then God is Forgiving, Merciful.
But if they resolve on divorce, then God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Divorced women must wait three menstrual cycles. It is not lawful for them to conceal what God has created in their wombs if they believe in God and the Last Day. Their husbands have more right to take them back during this period if they desire reconciliation. Women have rights similar to their obligations, according to what is fair, though men have a degree over them. God is Mighty, Wise.
Divorce may be pronounced twice, then either retain her with fairness or release her with kindness. It is not lawful for you to take back anything you have given them unless both fear they cannot uphold the limits of God. If you fear they cannot uphold the limits of God, there is no blame on either of them if she ransoms herself. These are the limits of God, so do not transgress them. Whoever transgresses the limits of God, those are the wrongdoers.
If he divorces her, she is no longer lawful to him until she marries another husband. If that husband then divorces her, there is no blame on either of them for reuniting, provided they believe they can uphold the limits set by God. These are the limits of God, which He makes clear to people who understand.
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, either keep them honorably or release them honorably. Do not hold on to them to cause harm and transgress. Whoever does this wrongs his own soul. Do not treat the verses of God as a joke. Remember the blessing God has bestowed upon you and what He has sent down to you of the Book and wisdom to instruct you. Be mindful of God and know that God has knowledge of all things.
When you divorce women and they reach the end of their waiting period, do not prevent them from remarrying their former husbands if they agree among themselves honorably. This is an instruction for those among you who believe in God and the Last Day. That is purer for you and cleaner. God knows and you do not know.
Mothers may nurse their children for two full years, for those who wish to complete the nursing. The father must provide their food and clothing honorably. No soul is burdened beyond its capacity. No mother should be harmed because of her child, nor should a father be harmed because of his child. The same duty falls upon the heir. If both parents decide on weaning by mutual consent and consultation, there is no blame on them. If you wish to have your children nursed by another woman, there is no blame on you as long as you pay what you agreed upon honorably. Be mindful of God and know that God sees everything you do.
Those among you who die and leave wives behind, their widows must wait four months and ten days. When they have completed their waiting period, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves honorably. God is fully aware of what you do.
There is no blame on you for hinting at a proposal to women or for keeping it to yourselves. God knows that you will think of them, but do not make secret promises to them except to speak honorably. Do not finalize the marriage contract until the prescribed period has ended. Know that God knows what is in your souls, so be cautious of Him. Know that God is Forgiving, Forbearing.
There is no blame on you if you divorce women before you have touched them or set a dowry for them. But provide for them, the wealthy according to his means and the poor according to his, a fair provision. This is a duty upon those who do good.
If you divorce them before you have touched them but after you have set a dowry for them, then half of what you specified is due, unless they waive it or the one in whose hand is the marriage contract waives it. To waive is closer to mindfulness of God. Do not forget generosity between yourselves. God sees everything you do.
Guard your prayers, especially the middle prayer, and stand before God in devoted obedience.
If you are in danger, pray on foot or riding. Then when you are safe, remember God as He taught you what you did not know.
Those of you who die and leave wives behind should bequeath for their wives a year's provision without being expelled. But if they leave on their own, there is no blame on you for what they do with themselves in a fair manner. God is Mighty, Wise.
Divorced women are entitled to fair provision. This is a duty upon those who are mindful of God.
This is how God makes His verses clear to you, so that you may understand.
Have you not seen those who fled their homes in the thousands, fearing death? God said to them, "Die," then He brought them back to life. God is truly gracious to people, but most people are not grateful.
Fight in the way of God and know that God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
Who will lend God a good loan so He may multiply it for him many times over? God withholds and extends, and to Him you will be returned.
Have you not seen the leaders of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a prophet of theirs, "Appoint a king for us so we may fight in the way of God"? He said, "Is it possible that if fighting is prescribed for you, you will not fight?" They said, "Why would we not fight in the way of God when we have been driven from our homes and our children?" But when fighting was prescribed for them, they turned away, except for a few of them. God knows the wrongdoers.
Their prophet said to them, "God has appointed Saul as king over you." They said, "How can he have kingship over us when we have more right to kingship than him, and he has not been given abundance of wealth?" He said, "God has chosen him over you and increased him abundantly in knowledge and stature. God gives His kingdom to whom He wills. God is All-Encompassing, All-Knowing."
Their prophet said to them, "The sign of his kingship is that the Ark will come to you, carried by angels, containing tranquility from your Lord and relics left by the family of Moses and the family of Aaron. In that is a sign for you, if you are believers."
When Saul set out with his forces, he said, "God will test you with a river. Whoever drinks from it is not with me, and whoever does not taste it is with me, except for one who scoops up a handful with his hand." But they drank from it, except for a few of them. When he and those who believed with him crossed it, they said, "We have no strength today against Goliath and his forces." But those who were certain they would meet God said, "How often has a small force defeated a large force by God's permission. God is with those who are patient."
When they faced Goliath and his forces, they said, "Our Lord, pour patience upon us, make our feet firm, and grant us victory over the disbelieving people."
They defeated them by God's permission, and David killed Goliath. God gave him kingship and wisdom and taught him whatever He willed. If God did not drive back some people by means of others, the earth would have been corrupted. But God is full of grace to all the worlds.
These are the verses of God. We recite them to you in truth, and you are among the messengers.
Those messengers: We favored some of them over others. Among them were those to whom God spoke, and He raised some of them in degrees. We gave Jesus son of Mary clear proofs and supported him with the Holy Spirit. If God had willed, those who came after them would not have fought one another after the clear proofs had come to them. But they differed: some of them believed and some of them disbelieved. If God had willed, they would not have fought one another, but God does what He wills.
O you who believe, spend from what We have provided you before a Day comes in which there is no bargaining, no friendship, and no intercession. The disbelievers are the wrongdoers.
God, there is no deity but Him, the Ever-Living, the Self-Sustaining. Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep. To Him belongs everything in the heavens and everything on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what lies before them and what lies behind them, and they encompass nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and preserving them does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.
There is no compulsion in religion. The right path has become clearly distinct from error. Whoever rejects false gods and believes in God has grasped the firmest handhold that never breaks. God is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
God is the Protector of those who believe. He brings them out of darkness into light. But those who disbelieve, their protectors are false gods who bring them out of light into darkness. These are the companions of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
Have you not seen the one who argued with Abraham about his Lord because God had given him kingship? When Abraham said, "My Lord is the One who gives life and causes death," he replied, "I give life and cause death." Abraham said, "God brings the sun from the east, so bring it from the west." The disbeliever was stunned. God does not guide wrongdoing people.
Or consider the one who passed by a town that had collapsed upon its roofs. He said, "How will God bring this back to life after its death?" So God caused him to die for a hundred years, then raised him. He asked, "How long have you remained?" He said, "I remained a day or part of a day." He said, "No, you have remained a hundred years. Look at your food and drink, they have not spoiled. And look at your donkey. We will make you a sign for people. And look at the bones, how We raise them and then clothe them with flesh." When it became clear to him, he said, "I know that God has power over all things."
When Abraham said, "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead," He said, "Do you not believe?" He said, "Yes, but so my heart may be reassured." He said, "Then take four birds and draw them close to you, then place a piece of each on every mountain, then call them. They will come to you swiftly. And know that God is Almighty, All-Wise."
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of God is like a seed that sprouts seven ears, each ear bearing a hundred grains. God multiplies for whom He wills. God is Boundless, All-Knowing.
Those who spend their wealth in the way of God and then do not follow what they spent with reminders or harm will have their reward with their Lord. They will have no fear, nor will they grieve.
A kind word and forgiveness are better than charity followed by harm. God is Self-Sufficient, Forbearing.
O you who believe, do not nullify your charity with reminders and harm, like one who spends his wealth to be seen by people and does not believe in God and the Last Day. His example is like a smooth rock covered with dust: a downpour strikes it and leaves it bare. They gain nothing from what they acquired. God does not guide the disbelieving people.
The example of those who spend their wealth seeking God's pleasure and to strengthen their souls is like a garden on a hillside: a downpour strikes it and it yields double its harvest. If no downpour strikes it, then a light rain suffices. God sees all that you do.
Would any of you wish to have a garden of palm trees and grapevines with rivers flowing beneath it, containing every kind of fruit, then old age strikes him while he has weak offspring, and a fiery whirlwind strikes it and it burns? This is how God makes clear to you the signs, so that you may reflect.
O you who believe, spend from the good things you have earned and from what We have brought forth for you from the earth. Do not aim for the worthless to give away when you yourselves would not accept it unless you closed your eyes to it. Know that God is Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.
Satan promises you poverty and commands you to shameful conduct, but God promises you forgiveness from Him and abundance. God is Vast, All-Knowing.
He grants wisdom to whom He wills, and whoever is granted wisdom has been given abundant good. Yet none take heed except those with understanding.
Whatever you spend in charity or vow as an offering, God knows it. The wrongdoers will have no helpers.
If you give charity openly, that is good. But if you conceal it and give it to the poor, that is better for you, and it will erase some of your sins. God is fully aware of what you do.
Their guidance is not your responsibility; rather, God guides whom He wills. Whatever good you spend is for your own souls, and you do not spend except seeking the Face of God. Whatever good you spend will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.
Give to the poor who are restricted in the cause of God and cannot travel through the land. The ignorant assume they are wealthy because of their restraint. You recognize them by their appearance: they do not beg from people persistently. Whatever good you spend, God knows it well.
Those who spend their wealth by night and by day, secretly and openly, will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.
Those who consume usury will not stand except like one driven to madness by Satan's touch. That is because they said, "Trade is just like usury." But God has permitted trade and forbidden usury. Whoever receives a warning from his Lord and stops may keep what he gained before, and his case rests with God. But whoever returns to it, those are the companions of the Fire, dwelling there forever.
God destroys usury and multiplies charity. God does not love any ungrateful sinner.
Those who believe, do good deeds, establish prayer, and give charity will have their reward with their Lord. No fear will come upon them, nor will they grieve.
O you who believe, be mindful of God and give up whatever remains of usury, if you are true believers.
If you do not, then be warned of war from God and His Messenger. But if you repent, you may keep your principal. You will neither wrong nor be wronged.
If the debtor is in hardship, grant him time until ease comes. But to give it as charity is better for you, if only you knew.
Be mindful of a Day when you will be returned to God. Then every soul will be paid in full for what it earned, and none will be wronged.
O you who believe, when you contract a debt for a fixed term, write it down. Let a scribe write it between you with fairness. No scribe should refuse to write as God has taught him, so let him write. Let the debtor dictate, and let him be mindful of God his Lord and not diminish anything from it. If the debtor is feeble-minded, weak, or unable to dictate himself, then let his guardian dictate with fairness. Call two witnesses from among your men. If two men are not available, then one man and two women from those you approve as witnesses, so that if one of them forgets, the other can remind her. Witnesses must not refuse when they are summoned. Do not be reluctant to write it down, whether small or large, along with its due date. That is more just in the sight of God, more reliable for testimony, and more likely to prevent doubt. But if it is an immediate transaction conducted among yourselves, there is no blame on you if you do not write it down. Have witnesses when you trade with one another. Let no scribe or witness be harmed. If you do so, it is wickedness on your part. Be mindful of God, and God teaches you. God knows all things.
If you are on a journey and cannot find a scribe, then a security deposit should be taken. If one of you trusts another, then let the one who is trusted fulfill his trust and be mindful of God his Lord. Do not conceal testimony. Whoever conceals it, his heart is sinful. God knows what you do.
To God belongs everything in the heavens and everything on earth. Whether you reveal what is in your souls or conceal it, God will call you to account for it. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. God has power over all things.
The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. All of them believe in God, His angels, His books, and His messengers. "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." They say, "We hear and we obey. Your forgiveness, our Lord. To You is the final return."
God does not burden a soul beyond its capacity. It will have what it has earned, and against it will be what it has committed. "Our Lord, do not hold us accountable if we forget or make mistakes. Our Lord, do not lay upon us a burden like the one You laid upon those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us, and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so grant us victory over the disbelieving people."
