Surah “Mary”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 98 verses

Kaf Ha Ya Ain Sad.
This is a mention of your Lord's mercy to His servant Zechariah.
When he called upon his Lord in a hushed voice.
He said, "My Lord, my bones have grown feeble and my head blazes with gray hair, yet never have I been disappointed in my prayers to You, my Lord."
I fear what my relatives will do after me, and my wife is barren, so grant me from Yourself an heir.
One who will inherit from me and inherit from the family of Jacob, and make him, my Lord, pleasing to You.
"O Zechariah, We give you good news of a boy whose name will be John. We have not given this name to anyone before him."
He said, "My Lord, how can I have a boy when my wife is barren and I have reached extreme old age?"
He said, "So it will be. Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, for I created you before when you were nothing.'"
He said, "My Lord, give me a sign." He said, "Your sign is that you will not speak to people for three nights, though you are in perfect health."
So he came out to his people from the sanctuary and signaled to them: glorify God morning and evening.
"O John, hold firmly to the Scripture." We gave him wisdom while still a boy.
Tenderness from Us and purity, and he was mindful of God.
He was devoted to his parents and was never arrogant or disobedient.
Peace be upon him the day he was born, the day he dies, and the day he is raised alive.
Mention in the Book Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the east.
She secluded herself from them, and We sent to her Our Spirit, and he appeared to her as a man in perfect form.
She said, "I seek refuge in the Most Merciful from you, if you fear God."
He said, "I am only a messenger from your Lord, to grant you a pure boy."
She said, "How can I have a boy when no man has touched me and I have not been unchaste?"
He said, "So it will be. Your Lord says, 'It is easy for Me, and We will make him a sign for people and a mercy from Us.' It is a matter already decreed."
She conceived him and withdrew with him to a distant place.
The pains of labor drove her to the trunk of a palm tree. She cried, "If only I had died before this and been completely forgotten!"
Then he called out to her from below her, "Do not grieve. Your Lord has placed a stream beneath you."
Shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you, and it will drop fresh, ripe dates upon you.
So eat and drink and be comforted. If you see any person, say, "I have vowed a fast to the Most Merciful, so I will not speak to anyone today."
She brought him to her people, carrying him. They said, "Mary, you have done something terrible!"
Sister of Aaron, your father was not a wicked man, and your mother was not unchaste.
She pointed to him. They said, "How can we speak to a child in the cradle?"
He said, "I am the servant of God. He has given me the Scripture and made me a prophet."
He has made me blessed wherever I am and has commanded me to pray and give charity as long as I live.
He has made me dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me arrogant or wretched.
Peace is upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the day I am raised alive.
That is Jesus, son of Mary, the word of truth about which they dispute.
It is not for God to take a son. Glory be to Him! When He decrees a matter, He simply says to it, "Be," and it is.
God is my Lord and your Lord, so worship Him. This is a straight path.
The factions differed among themselves. Woe to those who disbelieve when they witness a tremendous Day.
How clearly they will hear and see on the Day they come to Us! But today the wrongdoers are in obvious error.
Warn them of the Day of Regret, when the matter will be concluded while they remain heedless and do not believe.
We will inherit the earth and everyone on it, and to Us they will be returned.
Mention in the Book Abraham. He was a man of truth, a prophet.
When he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship what cannot hear, cannot see, and cannot benefit you at all?"
"O my father, knowledge has come to me that has not come to you, so follow me and I will guide you to a straight path."
"O my father, do not worship Satan. Satan has always been defiant toward the Most Merciful."
"O my father, I fear that a punishment from the Most Merciful will touch you, and you will become an ally of Satan."
He said, "Do you reject my gods, O Abraham? If you do not stop, I will stone you. Now leave me for a long time."
He said, "Peace be upon you. I will ask my Lord to forgive you. He has always been gracious to me."
"I will withdraw from you and from what you call upon besides God, and I will call upon my Lord. Perhaps I will not be disappointed in my prayer to my Lord."
So when he withdrew from them and from what they worshiped besides God, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and each of them We made a prophet.
We granted them from Our mercy, and We gave them a lasting reputation of high honor.
Mention in the Book Moses. He was chosen, and he was a messenger, a prophet.
We called him from the right side of the mountain and brought him near in private conversation.
We granted him from Our mercy his brother Aaron as a prophet.
Mention in the Book Ishmael. He was true to his promise, and he was a messenger, a prophet.
He used to command his family to pray and give charity, and he was pleasing to his Lord.
Mention in the Book Enoch. He was a man of truth, a prophet.
We raised him to a high station.
These are the ones God has blessed among the prophets, from the descendants of Adam, from those We carried with Noah, from the descendants of Abraham and Israel, and from those We guided and chose. When the verses of the Most Merciful were recited to them, they fell down prostrating and weeping.
Then generations came after them who neglected prayer and followed their desires. They will meet destruction.
Except those who repent, believe, and do good. These will enter Paradise and will not be wronged in the least.
Gardens of eternity that the Most Merciful has promised His servants in the unseen. His promise will certainly be fulfilled.
They will hear no idle talk there, only peace. They will have their provision there morning and evening.
That is the Paradise We give as inheritance to those of Our servants who are mindful.
"We do not descend except by the command of your Lord. To Him belongs what is before us, what is behind us, and what is between. Your Lord is never forgetful."
Lord of the heavens and the earth and everything between them. So worship Him and be steadfast in His worship. Do you know anyone of the same name?
The human being says, "When I am dead, will I really be brought out alive?"
Does the human being not remember that We created him before when he was nothing?
By your Lord, We will gather them along with the devils, then We will bring them around Hell on their knees.
Then We will drag out from every faction those who were most defiant against the Most Merciful.
Then We know best who most deserves to burn in it.
There is none among you who will not pass over it. This is a decree your Lord has made absolute.
Then We will save those who were mindful of God and leave the wrongdoers in it on their knees.
When Our clear verses are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe, "Which of the two groups has a better position and finer company?"
How many generations before them have We destroyed who were better in possessions and appearance?
Say, "Whoever is in error, let the Most Merciful extend his time, until they see what they were promised, whether the punishment or the Hour. Then they will know who is worse in position and weaker in forces."
God increases in guidance those who are guided. Lasting good deeds are better with your Lord in reward and better in outcome.
Have you seen the one who rejects Our signs and says, "I will surely be given wealth and children"?
Has he looked into the unseen, or has he taken a promise from the Most Merciful?
No! We will record what he says and extend his punishment extensively.
We will inherit from him what he speaks of, and he will come to Us alone.
They have taken gods besides God so that they might be a source of strength for them.
No! Those gods will reject their worship and turn against them.
Do you not see that We have sent the devils upon the disbelievers, inciting them relentlessly?
So do not be impatient with them. We are only counting down their days.
The Day We gather those who were mindful of God to the Most Merciful as an honored delegation.
We will drive the criminals to Hell like thirsty cattle to water.
None will have the power to intercede except those who have taken a covenant with the Most Merciful.
They say, "The Most Merciful has taken a son."
You have brought forth something monstrous.
The heavens nearly rupture from it, the earth nearly splits apart, and the mountains nearly collapse in devastation.
Because they attribute a son to the Most Merciful.
It is not fitting for the Most Merciful to take a son.
There is no one in the heavens and the earth who will not come to the Most Merciful as a servant.
He has counted them and numbered them precisely.
Each of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone.
Those who believe and do good deeds, the Most Merciful will place love for them.
We have made this easy in your tongue so that you may give good news to those who are mindful of God and warn with it a stubborn people.
How many generations before them have We destroyed? Can you perceive a single one of them or hear from them even a whisper?
