Surah “The Romans, The Byzantines”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 60 verses

Alif Lam Mim.
The Romans have been defeated.
In the nearest land, yet after their defeat they will be victorious.
Within a few years. The command belongs to God before and after, and on that day the believers will rejoice.
In God's victory. He grants victory to whom He wills, and He is the Almighty, the Merciful.
This is God's promise. God never breaks His promise, but most people do not know.
They know only the surface of worldly life, and of the Hereafter they are completely heedless.
Have they not reflected within themselves? God created the heavens and the earth and everything between them only in truth and for an appointed term. Yet many people deny the meeting with their Lord.
Have they not traveled through the land and seen what became of those before them? They were mightier than them in strength, they tilled the earth and built it up more than these have built. Their messengers came to them with clear proofs. God would never wrong them, but they wronged themselves.
Then the end of those who did evil was the worst, because they denied God's verses and mocked them.
God originates creation, then repeats it, then to Him you will be returned.
On the Day the Hour arrives, the criminals will be struck with despair.
They will have no intercessors among their partners, and they will reject their partners.
On the Day the Hour arrives, that Day they will be divided.
Those who believed and did righteous deeds will be delighted in a garden.
But those who disbelieved and denied Our signs and the meeting of the Hereafter, they will be brought into punishment.
So glorify God when you reach evening and when you reach morning.
To Him belongs all praise in the heavens and the earth, and in the late afternoon and when you reach noon.
He brings the living from the dead and brings the dead from the living, and He revives the earth after its death. Likewise you will be brought forth.
Among His signs is that He created you from dust, then suddenly you became human beings spreading across the earth.
Among His signs is that He created for you spouses from yourselves so you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you love and mercy. In that are signs for people who reflect.
Among His signs is the creation of the heavens and the earth and the diversity of your languages and colors. In that are signs for the knowledgeable.
Among His signs is your sleep by night and day and your seeking of His favor. In that are signs for people who listen.
Among His signs is that He shows you lightning, inspiring fear and hope, and He sends down water from the sky, reviving the earth after its death. In that are signs for people who reason.
Among His signs is that the heaven and earth stand firm by His command. Then when He calls you with a single call from the earth, you will emerge at once.
To Him belongs everyone in the heavens and the earth. All are devoutly obedient to Him.
He is the One who originates creation then repeats it, and that is even easier for Him. His is the highest attribute in the heavens and the earth, and He is the Almighty, the Wise.
He presents to you an example from yourselves: do any of those whom your right hands possess share equally with you in what We have provided you, so that you fear them as you fear one another? This is how We make the verses clear for people who reason.
But those who wrong follow their own desires without knowledge. Who can guide those whom God has left astray? They will have no helpers.
Set your face toward the religion, upright: the natural disposition God instilled in people. There is no altering God's creation. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know.
Turn to Him in repentance, be mindful of Him, establish prayer, and do not be among those who associate partners with God.
From those who divided their religion and became sects, each faction rejoicing in what they have.
When hardship touches people, they call upon their Lord, turning to Him in repentance. Then when He gives them a taste of mercy from Him, a group of them associates partners with their Lord.
So they deny what We have given them. Enjoy yourselves, for you will come to know.
Or have We sent down to them any authority that speaks of what they associate with Him?
When We give people a taste of mercy, they rejoice in it. But when misfortune strikes them because of what their own hands have done, they fall into despair.
Do they not see that God expands provision for whom He wills and restricts it? In that are signs for people who believe.
Give the relative their due, and the needy, and the traveler. That is best for those who seek the face of God, and those are the successful.
Whatever you give in usury to increase through people's wealth does not increase with God. But whatever you give in charity, seeking the face of God, those are the ones who multiply their reward.
God is the One who created you, then provided for you, then causes you to die, then brings you back to life. Can any of your partners do any of that? Glory be to Him, far above what they associate with Him.
Corruption has appeared on land and sea because of what people's hands have committed, so He may let them taste some of what they have done, that they might return.
Say, "Travel through the earth and see what became of those before. Most of them were idolaters."
So set your face toward the upright religion before a Day comes from God that cannot be turned back. On that Day, they will be split apart.
Whoever disbelieves, his disbelief is upon him. Whoever does good, they are preparing for themselves.
He will reward those who believe and do good from His grace. He does not love the disbelievers.
Among His signs is that He sends the winds bearing good news, to let you taste of His mercy, so that ships may sail by His command, so that you may seek of His grace, and so that you may be grateful.
We sent messengers before you to their peoples, and they came to them with clear proofs. Then We took vengeance on those who committed crimes. It was a duty upon Us to help the believers.
God is the One who sends the winds, and they stir up clouds, and He spreads them across the sky however He wills, and He breaks them into fragments, and you see the rain emerging from within them. When He causes it to fall upon whomever He wills of His servants, they rejoice.
Though before it was sent down upon them, just before it, they were in despair.
Look at the traces of God's mercy, how He gives life to the earth after its death. He is the One who gives life to the dead, and He has power over all things.
But if We sent a wind and they saw their crops turn yellow, they would persist in disbelief after that.
You cannot make the dead hear, nor can you make the deaf hear the call when they turn away in retreat.
You cannot guide the blind out of their error. You can only make hear those who believe in Our signs, for they have submitted.
God is the One who created you from weakness, then made strength after weakness, then made weakness and gray hair after strength. He creates what He wills, and He is the All-Knowing, the All-Powerful.
On the Day the Hour arrives, the criminals will swear they stayed no more than an hour. That is how they were always deluded.
Those given knowledge and faith will say, "You remained, according to God's decree, until the Day of Resurrection. This is the Day of Resurrection, but you did not know."
On that Day, the excuses of those who did wrong will not benefit them, nor will they be asked to make amends.
We have set forth for people in this Quran every kind of example. Yet if you bring them a verse, those who disbelieve will surely say, "You are nothing but falsifiers."
This is how God seals the hearts of those who do not know.
So be patient. God's promise is true. Do not let those who lack certainty shake you.
