Surah “The Story, Stories, The Narrative”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 88 verses

Ta Sin Mim.
These are the verses of the clear Book.
We recite to you from the story of Moses and Pharaoh in truth, for people who believe.
Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and divided its people into factions, oppressing one group among them, slaughtering their sons and sparing their women. He was among the corrupters.
We wanted to favor those who were oppressed in the land, to make them leaders, and to make them the inheritors.
We wanted to establish them in the land and show Pharaoh, Haman, and their soldiers the very thing they feared from them.
We inspired the mother of Moses: "Nurse him, and when you fear for him, cast him into the river. Do not fear and do not grieve. We will return him to you and make him one of the messengers."
The household of Pharaoh picked him up, only for him to become an enemy and a source of grief for them. Pharaoh, Haman, and their soldiers were sinners.
Pharaoh's wife said, "A delight for my eyes and yours! Do not kill him. Perhaps he will benefit us, or we can adopt him as a son." They did not perceive.
The heart of Moses's mother became empty. She almost revealed him, had We not strengthened her heart so she would remain among the believers.
She said to his sister, "Follow him." So she watched him from a distance while they did not perceive.
We had already forbidden wet nurses for him, so she said, "Shall I direct you to a household who will raise him for you and take good care of him?"
So We returned him to his mother, that her eyes might be cooled and she would not grieve, and that she would know that the promise of God is true. But most of them do not know.
When he reached full maturity and was fully grown, We gave him wisdom and knowledge. This is how We reward those who do good.
He entered the city at a time when its people were unaware, and he found two men fighting: one from his own people and the other from his enemies. The one from his people called to him for help against the one from his enemies, so Moses struck him with his fist and killed him. He said, "This is from the work of Satan. He is clearly a misleading enemy."
He said, "My Lord, I have wronged myself, so forgive me." So He forgave him. He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
He said, "My Lord, because of the favor You have bestowed upon me, I will never be a supporter of the criminals."
The next morning he was in the city, fearful and watchful, when suddenly the man who had sought his help the day before was crying out to him again. Moses said to him, "You are clearly a troublemaker."
Then when he was about to strike the one who was an enemy to both of them, the man said, "Moses, do you want to kill me as you killed someone yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not want to be among those who make peace."
A man came running from the far side of the city. He said, "Moses, the chiefs are conspiring against you to kill you, so leave. I am giving you sincere advice."
So he left the city, fearful and watchful. He said, "My Lord, save me from the wrongdoing people."
When he set out toward Midian, he said, "Perhaps my Lord will guide me to the right path."
When he arrived at the waters of Midian, he found a crowd of people watering their flocks, and he found two women standing apart, holding back their flock. He asked, "What is the matter with you?" They said, "We cannot water our flock until the shepherds move away, and our father is a very old man."
So he watered their flock for them, then withdrew to the shade and said, "My Lord, I am truly in need of whatever good You send down to me."
Then one of the two women came to him, walking shyly. She said, "My father is inviting you so he may reward you for watering our flock for us." When he came to him and told him his story, he said, "Do not be afraid. You have escaped from the wrongdoing people."
One of the two women said, "Father, hire him. The best person you can hire is someone strong and trustworthy."
He said, "I wish to marry one of these two daughters of mine to you, on condition that you work for me for eight years. If you complete ten, that will be of your own accord. I do not wish to make things difficult for you. You will find me, God willing, to be a righteous man."
He said, "That is agreed between you and me. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there will be no blame on me. God is witness to what we say."
When Moses had completed the term and set out with his family, he noticed a fire on the side of the mountain. He said to his family, "Stay here. I have spotted a fire. Perhaps I can bring you some news from it, or a burning brand so you can warm yourselves."
When he reached it, he was called from the right side of the valley, in the blessed spot, from the tree: "O Moses, I am God, Lord of all worlds."
"Throw down your staff." But when he saw it writhing like a serpent, he turned and fled without looking back. "O Moses, come forward and do not be afraid. You are completely safe."
"Put your hand inside your garment, and it will come out white without any disease. Draw your arm close to calm your fear. These are two proofs from your Lord to Pharaoh and his chiefs. They have been a sinful people."
He said, "My Lord, I killed one of them, and I fear they will kill me."
"My brother Aaron is more eloquent than me, so send him with me as a helper to confirm my words. I fear they will reject me."
He said, "We will strengthen your arm through your brother and grant you both authority, so they will not be able to touch you. With Our signs, you and those who follow you will prevail."
When Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said, "This is nothing but fabricated magic. We never heard of this among our forefathers."
Moses said, "My Lord knows best who has come with guidance from Him and who will have the best outcome in the Hereafter. The wrongdoers will never succeed."
Pharaoh said, "O chiefs, I know of no god for you other than myself. So Haman, fire up the clay for me and build me a tower, that I may look upon the god of Moses. I am certain he is a liar."
He and his soldiers grew arrogant in the land without any right, thinking they would never be returned to Us.
So We seized him and his soldiers and hurled them into the sea. See how the wrongdoers met their end.
We made them leaders calling others to the Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection they will receive no help.
We made a curse follow them in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection they will be among the despised.
We gave Moses the Scripture after We had destroyed earlier generations, as insights for people, and guidance, and mercy, so that they might remember.
You were not on the western side when We decreed the command to Moses, and you were not among the witnesses.
But We raised generations, and long ages passed over them. You were not dwelling among the people of Midian, reciting Our verses to them, but We were sending messengers.
You were not at the side of the Mount when We called out, but this is a mercy from your Lord so that you may warn a people to whom no warner came before you, so that they might remember.
Were it not that a disaster might strike them for what their hands have sent forth, and they would say, "Our Lord, if only You had sent us a messenger, we would have followed Your verses and been among the believers."
But when the truth came to them from Us, they said, "Why was he not given the like of what Moses was given?" Did they not reject what Moses was given before? They said, "Two works of magic supporting each other," and they said, "We reject them all."
Say, "Then bring a scripture from God that is more guiding than these two, and I will follow it, if you are truthful."
If they do not respond to you, then know that they only follow their desires. Who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from God? God does not guide the wrongdoing people.
We have conveyed the Word to them continuously, so that they might remember.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture before it believe in it.
When it is recited to them, they say, "We believe in it. It is the truth from our Lord. We were already submitting before it."
These will be given their reward twice for their patience. They repel evil with good, and they spend from what We have provided them.
When they hear idle talk, they turn away from it and say, "We have our deeds and you have your deeds. Peace be upon you. We do not seek the ignorant."
You cannot guide whoever you love, but God guides whoever He wills. He knows best those who are guided.
They say, "If we follow the guidance with you, we will be snatched from our land." Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary to which the fruits of all things are brought as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
How many a town We destroyed that was ungrateful for its livelihood. There are their dwellings, barely inhabited after them. We were the inheritors.
Your Lord would never destroy towns until He had sent to their mother-city a messenger reciting Our verses to them. We would never destroy towns unless their people were wrongdoers.
Whatever you have been given is only the enjoyment of worldly life and its adornment. What is with God is better and more lasting. Will you not reason?
Is the one We have promised a beautiful promise, which he will receive, like the one We have given the pleasures of this worldly life, then on the Day of Resurrection he will be among those brought forth?
On the Day He will call to them and say, "Where are My partners that you used to claim?"
Those against whom the verdict has been justified will say, "Our Lord, these are the ones we led astray. We led them astray just as we ourselves went astray. We declare our innocence before You. It was not us they were worshiping."
It will be said, "Call upon your partners." So they will call upon them, but they will not respond to them, and they will see the punishment. If only they had been guided.
On the Day He will call to them and say, "What answer did you give the messengers?"
All information will be lost to them that Day, and they will not be able to question one another.
But whoever repents, believes, and does righteous deeds may well be among the successful.
Your Lord creates what He wills and chooses. They have no choice. Glory be to God, and exalted is He above what they associate with Him.
Your Lord knows what their hearts conceal and what they reveal.
He is God. There is no god but Him. To Him belongs all praise in the first life and the last. His is the judgment, and to Him you will be returned.
Say, "Have you considered: if God made the night perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than God could bring you light? Will you not listen?"
Say, "Have you considered: if God made the day perpetual over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than God could bring you night in which to rest? Will you not see?"
Out of His mercy He made for you the night and the day, so that you may rest in it and seek from His favor, and so that you may be grateful.
On the Day He will call to them and say, "Where are My partners that you used to claim?"
We will draw out a witness from every nation and say, "Produce your proof." Then they will know that the truth belongs to God, and all they used to fabricate will vanish from them.
Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he oppressed them. We had given him such treasures that their keys would burden a group of strong men. His people said to him, "Do not gloat, for God does not love those who gloat."
Seek the Home of the Hereafter through what God has given you, but do not neglect your share of this world. Do good as God has done good to you, and do not seek corruption in the land, for God does not love the corrupters.
He said, "I was only given this because of knowledge I possess." Did he not know that God had destroyed before him generations who were stronger than him and greater in accumulation? The criminals will not even be questioned about their sins.
He came out before his people in all his splendor. Those who desired the life of this world said, "If only we had the like of what Qarun has been given! He truly has great fortune."
But those who had been given knowledge said, "Woe to you! The reward of God is better for whoever believes and does good, and none will receive it except the patient."
So We caused the earth to swallow him and his home. He had no group to help him against God, nor could he help himself.
Those who had wished for his position the day before began saying, "How strange! God expands provision for whoever He wills among His servants and restricts it. Had God not been gracious to us, He would have caused the earth to swallow us too. How strange! The disbelievers never succeed."
That Home of the Hereafter We reserve for those who do not seek superiority on earth or corruption. The final outcome belongs to those mindful of God.
Whoever comes with a good deed will have something better than it, and whoever comes with an evil deed, those who did evil will only be repaid for what they used to do.
The One who ordained the Quran upon you will surely return you to a place of return. Say, "My Lord knows best who comes with guidance and who is in clear error."
You never expected the Book to be sent down to you, but it was a mercy from your Lord. So never be a supporter of the disbelievers.
Do not let them turn you away from the verses of God after they have been sent down to you. Call people to your Lord, and never be among those who associate partners with God.
Do not call upon any other god besides God. There is no god but Him. Everything will perish except His Face. His is the judgment, and to Him you will all be returned.
