Surah “The Pilgrimage”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 78 verses

O people, be mindful of your Lord. The quaking of the Hour is a tremendous thing.
On the Day you see it, every nursing mother will abandon what she nurses, and every pregnant woman will drop her load. You will see people appearing drunk, though they are not drunk, but the punishment of God is severe.
Among people is one who argues about God without knowledge, following every rebellious devil.
It is decreed upon him that whoever befriends him, he will lead astray and guide to the punishment of the Blaze.
O people, if you are in doubt about the Resurrection, then consider that We created you from dust, then from a drop, then from a clinging clot, then from a lump of flesh, formed and unformed, so that We may make clear to you. We settle in the wombs whatever We will for an appointed term, then We bring you out as infants, then let you reach your full strength. Among you is one who dies early, and among you is one who is returned to the most feeble old age, so that he knows nothing after having known. You see the earth lifeless, but when We send down rain upon it, it stirs and swells and sprouts every delightful kind.
That is because God is the Truth, and He gives life to the dead, and He has power over all things.
The Hour is coming, no doubt about it, and God will resurrect those in the graves.
Among people is one who argues about God without knowledge, without guidance, and without an illuminating Book.
Turning his neck in arrogance to lead others astray from the path of God. For him is disgrace in this world, and on the Day of Resurrection We will make him taste the punishment of burning.
That is for what your hands have sent ahead, and God is never unjust to His servants.
Among people is one who worships God on the edge: if good befalls him, he is content with it, but if a trial strikes him, he turns on his face. He has lost this world and the Hereafter. That is the clear loss.
He calls upon, besides God, what neither harms him nor benefits him. That is the extreme misguidance.
He calls upon one whose harm is closer than his benefit. What a wretched protector and what a wretched companion.
God will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. God does whatever He wills.
Whoever thinks that God will not help him in this world and the Hereafter, let him stretch a rope to the sky, then cut it off, and see whether his scheme removes what enrages him.
Thus We have sent it down as clear verses, and God guides whoever He wills.
Those who believe, the Jews, the Sabians, the Christians, the Magians, and those who associate partners with God: God will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection. God is Witness over all things.
Do you not see that to God prostrates everyone in the heavens and everyone on earth, and the sun, the moon, the stars, the mountains, the trees, the creatures, and many among humankind? Yet many have deserved the punishment. Whoever God humiliates has no one to honor him. God does whatever He wills.
These are two adversaries who dispute about their Lord. For those who disbelieve, garments of fire will be cut out for them, and scalding water will be poured over their heads.
It will melt what is in their bellies and their skins.
For them are rods of iron.
Every time they try to escape from it out of anguish, they are driven back into it: "Taste the punishment of burning!"
God will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds into gardens beneath which rivers flow. They will be adorned there with bracelets of gold and pearls, and their clothing there will be silk.
They were guided to pure speech, and they were guided to the path of the Praiseworthy.
Those who disbelieve and bar others from the path of God and from the Sacred Mosque, which We made for all people equally, whether resident there or visitor: whoever seeks to violate it with wrongdoing, We will make him taste a painful punishment.
When We established for Abraham the site of the House: "Do not associate anything with Me, and purify My House for those who circle it, those who stand in prayer, and those who bow and prostrate."
Proclaim the Pilgrimage to the people. They will come to you on foot and on every lean camel, arriving from every distant pass.
So that they may witness benefits for themselves and mention the name of God during the appointed days over the livestock He has provided them. So eat from them and feed the miserable and the poor.
Then let them complete their rites, fulfill their vows, and circle the Ancient House.
So it is. Whoever honors the sacred ordinances of God, it is better for him with his Lord. Livestock has been made lawful for you except what is recited to you. So shun the filth of idols and shun false speech.
Be devoted to God, not associating partners with Him. Whoever associates partners with God is like one who has fallen from the sky: birds snatch him away, or the wind sweeps him to a distant place.
That is so. Whoever honors the sacred rites of God, it flows from the reverence of hearts.
In them you have benefits until an appointed time, then their place of sacrifice is at the Ancient House.
For every community We appointed a rite of sacrifice, so they may mention the name of God over the livestock He provided them. Your God is One God, so submit to Him. Give good news to the humbled.
Those whose hearts tremble when God is mentioned, who endure patiently whatever befalls them, who establish Prayer, and who spend from what We have provided them.
The sacrificial camels, We have made them among the sacred rites of God for you. In them is good for you. So mention the name of God over them as they stand in rows. Then when they collapse on their sides, eat from them and feed the content and the needy. This is how We have made them subject to you, so that you may be grateful.
Their meat will never reach God, nor will their blood, but what reaches Him is your reverence. This is how He made them subject to you, so that you may glorify God for guiding you. Give good news to those who do good.
God defends those who believe. God does not love any treacherous ingrate.
Permission is granted to those who are fought against because they have been wronged. God is fully capable of granting them victory.
Those who were driven from their homes unjustly, only because they said, "Our Lord is God." If God did not repel some people by means of others, monasteries, churches, synagogues, and mosques where God's name is often mentioned would have been demolished. God will surely help those who help Him. God is Strong, Mighty.
Those who, if We establish them in the land, will establish Prayer, give Charity, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong. To God belongs the outcome of all matters.
If they deny you, so did the people of Noah before them, and Aad, and Thamud.
And the people of Abraham, and the people of Lot.
And the people of Midian. Moses too was denied. I gave the disbelievers time, then I seized them. How terrible was My condemnation!
How many towns We destroyed while they were steeped in wrongdoing, and now they lie fallen on their roofs, with abandoned wells and towering palaces.
Have they not traveled through the land so they might have hearts to reason with, or ears to hear with? It is not the eyes that go blind, but the hearts within the chests that go blind.
They urge you to hasten the punishment, but God never breaks His promise. A single day with your Lord is like a thousand years by your count.
How many towns I gave respite to while they were steeped in wrongdoing, then I seized them. To Me is the final return.
Say, "O people, I am only a clear warner to you."
Those who believe and do good deeds will have forgiveness and generous provision.
But those who strive against Our verses, trying to undermine them, they are the companions of Hell.
We never sent before you any messenger or prophet without Satan casting into his recitation when he recited. But God abolishes what Satan casts, then God makes His verses precise. God is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
This is so He may make what Satan casts a trial for those with sickness in their hearts and those whose hearts are hardened. The wrongdoers are in extreme opposition.
And so those given knowledge may know that it is the truth from your Lord and believe in it, and their hearts may humbly submit to it. God surely guides those who believe to a straight path.
Those who disbelieve will remain in doubt about it until the Hour comes upon them suddenly, or the punishment of a barren Day strikes them.
Sovereignty on that Day belongs to God. He will judge between them. Those who believed and did good deeds will be in Gardens of Bliss.
But those who disbelieved and rejected Our signs, for them is a humiliating punishment.
Those who emigrated in the cause of God and were then killed or died, God will surely provide them with excellent provision. God is the best of providers.
He will admit them to an entrance that will please them. God is All-Knowing, Most Forbearing.
So it is. Whoever retaliates with the equivalent of what was inflicted on him, then is wronged again, God will surely help him. God is Pardoning, Forgiving.
That is because God merges the night into the day and merges the day into the night, and God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
That is because God is the Truth, and what they invoke besides Him is falsehood, and God is the Most High, the Most Great.
Do you not see that God sends down water from the sky, and the earth becomes green? God is Subtle, All-Aware.
To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is on the earth. God is the Self-Sufficient, the Praiseworthy.
Do you not see that God has made everything on earth serve you, and the ships sail through the sea by His command? He holds the sky from falling upon the earth except by His permission. God is truly Compassionate and Merciful to humanity.
He is the One who gave you life, then will cause you to die, then will bring you back to life. Truly, the human being is ungrateful.
For every community We have appointed rites that they observe. So do not let them dispute with you over this matter. Call them to your Lord, for you are on a straight path of guidance.
If they argue with you, say, "God knows best what you do."
God will judge between you on the Day of Resurrection concerning what you used to differ over.
Do you not know that God knows everything in the heavens and the earth? All of that is in a Record. That is easy for God.
They worship besides God that for which He has sent down no authority and about which they have no knowledge. The wrongdoers will have no helper.
When Our clear verses are recited to them, you see disgust on the faces of those who disbelieve. They nearly attack those who recite Our verses to them. Say, "Shall I tell you of something worse than that? The Fire, which God has promised to those who disbelieve. What a wretched destination!"
O people, a parable is set forth, so listen to it: Those you call upon besides God could never create a fly, even if they all gathered together for it. And if a fly snatched something from them, they could not retrieve it. How weak are the seeker and the sought!
They have not valued God as He deserves to be valued. God is truly Powerful, Mighty.
God chooses messengers from among the angels and from among people. God is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
He knows what lies before them and what lies behind them. To God all matters return.
O you who believe, bow down, prostrate, worship your Lord, and do good so that you may succeed.
Strive for God as He deserves to be striven for. He has chosen you and placed no hardship on you in religion, the faith of your father Abraham. He named you Muslims before and in this revelation, so that the Messenger may be a witness over you and you may be witnesses over humanity. So establish the Prayer, give the Charity, and hold fast to God. He is your Protector. What an excellent Protector and what an excellent Helper!
