Surah “The Thunder”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 43 verses

Alif Lam Mim Ra. These are the verses of the Book. What has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth, but most people do not believe.
God is the One who raised the heavens without pillars that you can see, then established Himself upon the Throne. He subjected the sun and the moon, each running for an appointed term. He directs all affairs and makes the signs clear, so that you may be certain of meeting your Lord.
He is the One who spread out the earth and placed in it firm mountains and rivers. From every fruit He made pairs of two. He wraps the night over the day. In all this are signs for people who reflect.
On the earth are neighboring plots, gardens of grapevines, crops, and palm trees, some clustered and some standing alone, all watered by the same water, yet We make some taste better than others. In all this are signs for people who reason.
If you are amazed, then truly amazing is their saying, "When we have become dust, will we really be created anew?" These are the ones who have rejected their Lord. These will have chains around their necks. These are the companions of the Fire, where they will remain forever.
They urge you to bring the punishment before the mercy, though examples have already passed before them. Your Lord is full of forgiveness for people despite their wrongdoing, yet your Lord is severe in punishment.
Those who reject say, "Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?" You are only a warner, and every people has a guide.
God knows what every female carries, what the wombs lose and what they gain. Everything with Him is measured.
Knower of the unseen and the seen, the Grand, the Most High.
It is the same to Him whether any of you conceals speech or declares it openly, whether one hides in the night or walks freely in the day.
Each person has successive ones before him and behind him, guarding him by God's command. God does not change the condition of a people until they change what is within themselves. When God wills misfortune for a people, there is no turning it back, and they have no protector besides Him.
He is the One who shows you lightning, inspiring fear and hope, and He forms the heavy clouds.
The thunder glorifies His praise, and so do the angels in awe of Him. He sends the thunderbolts and strikes with them whoever He wills, yet still they argue about God, while He is fierce in power.
To Him belongs the call of truth. Those they call upon besides Him do not respond to them at all, like one stretching out his hands toward water so it might reach his mouth, but it never will. The prayers of the disbelievers are nothing but futile wandering.
To God prostrates everyone in the heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly, as do their shadows, morning and evening.
Say, "Who is the Lord of the heavens and the earth?" Say, "God." Say, "Have you then taken protectors besides Him who have no power to benefit or harm even themselves?" Say, "Are the blind and the seeing equal? Or is darkness equal to light?" Or have they assigned partners to God who created as He creates, so that creation seemed alike to them? Say, "God is the Creator of all things, and He is the One, the Overpowering."
He sends down water from the sky, and valleys flow according to their measure, and the torrent carries rising foam. From what they heat in fire to make ornaments or tools comes foam like it. This is how God illustrates truth and falsehood: the foam vanishes as waste, but what benefits people remains in the earth. This is how God sets forth examples.
For those who respond to their Lord is the best reward. But those who do not respond to Him, even if they possessed everything on earth and as much again, they would offer it all as ransom. For them is a terrible reckoning, and their refuge is Hell, a wretched resting place.
Is one who knows that what has been sent down to you from your Lord is the truth like one who is blind? Only those with understanding take heed.
Those who fulfill their covenant with God and do not break the pledge.
Those who join what God has commanded to be joined, who stand in awe of their Lord, and who fear a terrible reckoning.
Those who are patient, seeking the face of their Lord, who establish prayer, who spend from what We have provided them secretly and openly, and who repel evil with good, for them is the ultimate home.
Gardens of eternity they will enter, along with the righteous among their fathers, their spouses, and their descendants. Angels will enter upon them from every gate.
"Peace be upon you for your patience. How excellent is the ultimate home!"
But those who break the covenant of God after confirming it, who sever what God has commanded to be joined, and who spread corruption on earth, upon them is the curse, and for them is the worst home.
God extends provision to whom He wills and restricts it. They rejoice in the life of this world, but the life of this world compared to the Hereafter is nothing but fleeting enjoyment.
Those who disbelieve say, "Why has no sign been sent down to him from his Lord?" Say, "God leaves astray whoever He wills and guides to Himself whoever turns back to Him."
Those who believe, their hearts find peace in the remembrance of God. Is it not in the remembrance of God that hearts find peace?
Those who believe and do good deeds, joy is theirs and a beautiful return.
Thus We have sent you to a nation before which other nations have passed away, so that you may recite to them what We have revealed to you, yet they deny the Most Merciful. Say, "He is my Lord. There is no god but Him. In Him I place my trust, and to Him is my return."
If there were a Quran by which mountains could be moved, or the earth split apart, or the dead made to speak. But to God belongs all command. Have the believers not yet realized that if God had willed, He would have guided all of humanity? Disaster will keep striking those who disbelieve for what they have done, or it will settle close to their homes, until God's promise comes to pass. God never breaks His promise.
Messengers before you were mocked, but I gave the disbelievers time, then I seized them. How terrible was My punishment!
Is He who stands over every soul, watching what it has committed? Yet they assign partners to God. Say, "Name them! Or will you inform Him of something on earth He does not know? Or is it just empty words?" No, their scheming has been made appealing to those who disbelieve, and they have been barred from the path. Whoever God leaves astray has no guide.
For them is punishment in the life of this world, but the punishment of the Hereafter is far harder, and they have no protector against God.
The likeness of Paradise promised to the mindful: rivers flow beneath it, its fruit is everlasting and so is its shade. That is the destiny of those who were mindful, while the destiny of the disbelievers is the Fire.
Those to whom We gave the Scripture rejoice in what has been sent down to you, but among the factions are those who reject part of it. Say, "I have only been commanded to worship God and not associate anything with Him. To Him I call, and to Him is my return."
Thus We have sent it down as a judgment in Arabic. If you follow their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you will have no protector or defender against God.
We sent messengers before you and gave them wives and offspring. No messenger could bring a sign except by God's permission. For every term there is a decree.
God erases what He wills and confirms what He wills, and with Him is the Mother of the Book.
Whether We show you part of what We promise them or take your soul, your duty is only to deliver the message, and Ours is the reckoning.
Do they not see that We come to the land, diminishing it from its edges? God judges, and none can reverse His judgment. He is swift in reckoning.
Those before them plotted, but all plotting belongs to God. He knows what every soul acquires, and the disbelievers will come to know whose is the final home.
Those who disbelieve say, "You are not a messenger." Say, "God is sufficient as a witness between me and you, as is whoever has knowledge of the Scripture."
