Surah “The Clot, Read”

as rendered by Dr. Laleh Bakhtiar — 19 verses

Recite in the Name of thy Lord Who created.
He created the human being from a clot.
Recite: Thy Lord is the Most Generous,
He Who taught by the pen.
He taught the human being what he knows not.
No indeed! The human being is, truly, defiant.
He considered himself self-sufficient.
Truly, to thy Lord is the returning.
Hast thou thyself considered he who prohibits
a servant when he invoked blessings?
Hast thou considered if he had been on guidance
or commanded God-consciousness?
Hast thou considered if he denied and turned away?
Knows he not that God sees?
No indeed! Truly, if he refrains himself not, We will, surely, lay hold of him by the forelock,
a lying, inequitable forelock.
And let him call to his conclave.
We will call to the guards of hell.
No indeed! Truly, obey thou him not but prostrate thyself to God and be near to Him.‡
