Surah “The Cloaked One, The Man Wearing a Cloak, The Clothed One”

as rendered by Talal Itani & AI (2025) — 56 verses

O you wrapped in your cloak!
Rise and warn!
Your Lord, glorify Him!
Your garments, purify them!
Defilement, abandon it!
Do not give expecting more in return.
For your Lord, be patient.
When the horn is blown.
That Day will be a difficult day.
For the disbelievers, far from easy.
Leave Me with the one I created alone.
I granted him vast wealth.
Sons by his side.
I smoothed everything out for him.
Then he expects Me to give him more!
No! He has been stubborn toward Our verses.
I will exhaust him with a grueling climb.
He thought and calculated.
May he be destroyed! How he calculated!
Then may he be destroyed! How he calculated!
Then he looked.
Then he frowned and scowled.
Then he turned away in arrogance.
He said, "This is nothing but magic passed down."
"This is nothing but human speech."
I will cast him into Saqar.
What will make you realize what Saqar is?
It spares nothing and leaves nothing behind.
It scorches the flesh.
Over it are nineteen.
We have appointed only angels as keepers of the Fire. We made their number a test for the disbelievers, so that those given the Scripture may be certain, and those who believe may increase in faith, and neither those given the Scripture nor the believers will doubt. Those with sickness in their hearts and the disbelievers will say, "What does God mean by this number?" This is how God leaves astray whoever He wills and guides whoever He wills. None knows the forces of your Lord except Him. This is nothing but a reminder for humanity.
No! By the moon.
By the night as it retreats.
By the dawn as it breaks.
It is one of the greatest things.
A warning to humanity.
For whoever among you wishes to advance or fall behind.
Every soul is held hostage by what it has committed.
Except the people of the right.
In gardens, they will ask.
About the criminals.
"What drove you into Saqar?"
They will say, "We were not among those who prayed."
"We did not feed the poor."
"We used to indulge in vain talk with those who indulged."
"We used to deny the Day of Judgment."
"Until the certainty came to us."
No intercession from intercessors will benefit them.
What is wrong with them that they turn away from the reminder?
As if they were wild donkeys fleeing.
From a lion.
Each one of them wants to be handed scriptures spread open.
No! They do not fear the Hereafter.
No! This is a reminder.
Whoever wills may take heed.
They will not take heed unless God wills. He is worthy of being revered and worthy of granting forgiveness.
