[Qur'an 9:2] is an immunity from Allah and His Messenger to those of the polytheists with whom you [believers] made a treaty.
And you [polytheist] may travel freely in the earth [during] four months but you should know that you cannot cause failure to Allah, and that Allah is the one who disgraces the infidels.
And an announcement from Allah and His Messenger to the people [gathered] on the day of the greater pilgrimage that Allah is free from the polytheists, and [so is] His Messenger. So if you [polytheists] repented, then that is best for you; but if you turned away - then know that you will not cause failure to Allah. And give the news to those who disbelieved about a painful punishment
Except those of the polytheists with whom you [believers] made a treaty, then they have not failed you in anything and have not supported anyone against you. So fulfill to them their treaty till their term. Indeed, Allah loves those who fear [Him].
So when the forbidden months have passed, then kill the polytheists [Qur'an 8:34, Qur'an 9:28] wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repented, established the prayers, and brought the zakah, then let them go on their way. Indeed, Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.
And if any one of the polytheists seeks your asylum [O man], then grant him asylum until he hears the words of Allah. Then let him reach his place of safety. That is because, they are a people who do not know.
How can there be for the polytheists a treaty with Allah and with His Messenger, except those you [O believers, on the behalf of Allah and His Messenger] made a treaty at al-Masjid al-haram? So whatever [obligations] they set on, belongs to you; so you set on accordingly, belongs to them. Indeed, Allah loves those who fear [Him].
How [they be true to their obligations] while, if they prevail against you, they do not observe concerning you any pact of kinship or covenant of protection? They satisfy you with their mouths, but their hearts refuse [compliance], and most of them are defiantly disobedient.
They exchanged the signs of Allah for a small price [all inclusiveness in the greater pilgrimage] and they hindered [their men, Qur'an 8:72] from His way. Indeed, evil was what they were working on [throughout the history].
They do not respect concerning a believer: the ties of kinship or covenant of protection. And those, they are the transgressors.
So if they repented, established the prayers, and brought the zakah, then they are your brothers in the religion; and We explain in detail the verses for a people who know.
But if they break their oaths after their treaty and defame concerning your religion, then fight the imams of disbelief, for indeed, there are no oaths [sacred] to them; [fight them that] they might cease.
Would you not fight a people who violated their oaths, and intended to expel the Messenger [from Mecca]? And they began against you the first? Do you fear them? But Allah has more right that you should fear Him, if you were [true] believers.
Fight them; Allah will punish them by your hands and will disgrace them and give you victory against them and heal the breasts of a believing people [Qur'an 8:17]
And He will remove their hearts' fury. And Allah relents upon whoever He wills; and Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Do you [believers] think that you will be left, and Allah will not be knowing those of you who strive [for His way] and are not taking confidants other than Allah and His Messenger and the believers? And Allah is Aware about whatever you are working.
It was not for the polytheists to maintain the mosques of Allah [while] witnessing against themselves in the disbelief. [For] those, their works are worthless, and in the Fire they will abide for ever.
Only he shall maintain the mosques of Allah who believes in Allah and the Last Day and establishes the prayers and brings the zakah and does not fear except Allah. Then perhaps those to becoming of the guided ones.
Do you make the watering of the pilgrims and the maintenance of al-Masjid al-haram as like [the deeds of] who believed in Allah and the Last Day and strove in the way of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah. And Allah does not guide the oppressing people.
Those who believed, emigrated and strove in the way of Allah with their wealth and their lives, are greater in rank on the sight of Allah. And those, they are the triumphant ones.
Their Lord gives them glad tidings of mercy from Him and pleasure and of paradises for them wherein is everlasting bliss.
[They will] dwell therein for ever. Indeed, Allah has with Him a great reward.
O you who believed, do not take your fathers or your brothers as guardians if they have preferred the disbelief over the belief. And whoever takes them as guardian from you, then those, they are the oppressors.
Say [O Muhammad], "If your fathers, and your sons, and your brothers, and your wives, and your tribes, and the riches you have acquired, and a trade where you fear its decline, and dwellings you take delight in, are more beloved to you than Allah and His Messenger and striving in His way, then wait until Allah brings His command. And Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people."
Indeed Allah did help you in many battle-fields; and on a day of Hunayn, when your great number pleased you, but it did not avail on you anything. And the earth was confined upon you [parameters of battle fields: scope, range, intensity, numbers etc] in what it was widened; then you turned back, fleeing.
Then Allah pour His tranquility on His Messenger and upon the believers; and He sent down armies [angels] you did not see them; and He punished those who disbelieved. And that is the recompense of the infidels.
Then Allah relents after that upon whoever He wills. And Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.
O you who believed, indeed the polytheists are a filth, so let them not approach al-Masjid al-haram after this, their [final] year. And if you fear poverty, then soon Allah will enrich you from His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Fight those who are not believing in Allah, nor in the Last Day nor considering unlawful what Allah and His Messenger have made unlawful, nor adopting the religion of truth from those who were given the Book, until they give the jizyah willingly while they are subdued.
The Jews say, "Ezra is the son of Allah"; and the Christians say, "The Messiah is the son of Allah." That is their sayings from their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before [rather than imitating those who believed before]. Allah fought them. How are they fooled?
They have adopted their rabbis and their monks as lords other than Allah; while the Messiah, son of Mary -- when not they [Messiah, Mary in male and female gender, Ezra] were commanded except to worship one God. There is no deity except Him. Exalted is He above whatever [mode, head, etc] they [Jews and Christians] associate [with Him, Qur'an 9:30].
They [Jews and Christians] want to extinguish the light of Allah with their mouths [e.g., "love"], but Allah refused except to perfect His light, although the infidels are hating it [e.g., stronger love, Qur'an 2:165, Qur'an 9:128].
He is the one who sends His Messenger with the guidance and the religion of truth to manifest it over the every single religion, even though the polytheists are hating it.
O you who believed, indeed many of the rabbis and the monks devour the wealth of mankind in the falsehood and avert [them] from the way of Allah. And those who hoard the gold and the silver and spend it not in the way of Allah, then give them tidings about a painful punishment.
On a Day when it will be heated upon itself in the fire of Hell, so will be branded by it, their foreheads, their sides, and their backs, [it will be said], "This is what you hoarded for yourselves, so taste what you were hoarding."
Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the Book of Allah on a day when He created the heavens and the earth; from which four are sacred. That is the correct Religion. So do not oppress yourselves in them. And fight against the polytheist collectively as they fight you collectively. And know that Allah is with those who fear [Him].
The postponing [of the sacred months] is only an increase in the disbelief in which those who disbelieved are led astray. They make it lawful one year and forbidden it another year, to correspond to the number what Allah has forbidden and [thus] they make lawful what Allah has forbidden. Sugar coated to them is the evil of their works. And Allah does not guide the infidel people.
O you who believed, what belongs to you that, when it is said to you, "March forth in the way of Allah," you cling heavily to the earth? Are you content with the life of this world rather than the Hereafter? But what is the enjoyment of worldly life in [compared to] the Hereafter except a little?
If you do not march forth, He will punish you with a grievous penalty and will replace you with another people, and you will not harm Him in anything. And Allah is over every thing competent.
If you do not aid him, Allah has already aided him, when those who disbelieved exited him out [from Makkah] as the second of two, when they both were in the cave. When he said to his friend, "Do not grieve; indeed Allah is with us." And Allah sent down His serenity upon him, and strengthened him with armies [angels] you did not see, and made the word of those who disbelieved the lowest, while the word of Allah - that is the highest. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.
[O Believers!] March forth lightly or heavily, and strive in the way of Allah with your wealth and your lives. That is best for you if you were knowing.
If it was an welcoming gain and an easy journey, they [hypocrites] would have followed you; but distance was too far upon them. And they will swear by Allah, "If we were able, we would have gone out with you [believers]." They are destroying themselves, and Allah knows that indeed they are indeed liars.
May Allah be pardoning on you, [O Muhammad]. Why should you permit them [to stay behind] until it becomes manifest to you those who were truthful and you knew the liars?
Those who believe in Allah and the Last Day would not ask permission from you [O Muhammad] that they strive with their wealth and their lives. And Allah is Knowing about those who fear [Him].
Only is asking your permission [to stay behind] - those who do not believe in Allah and the Last Day. And it is causing doubt in their hearts. So they, in their doubt, they keep hesitating.
And if they truly wanted to march forth; they would have prepared for it, a preparation. But Allah disliked their being sent forth, so He made them lag behind, and it was said, "Stay [behind] with those who are staying behind."
Had they exited out in your midst [O believers], they would not have added you except a ruin, and they would have been active in your midst seeking to test [your unity] within you. And from you are avid listeners to them. And Allah is Knowing about the oppressors.
Indeed they already sought the test [of your unity] before and had upset matters for you [O Muhammad], until the truth came, and the command of Allah became manifest, while they disliked it.
And from them is he who says, "Grant to me [staying behind] and do not test me." Verily, into test they have fallen. And indeed, Hell will surely encompass the infidels.
If excellence befalls you [O Muhammad], it distresses them; but if a calamity befalls you, they say, "Already we took our affairs before," and they turn away while they are rejoicing.
Say, "Will not befall us, except what Allah has decreed for us; He is our Gaurdian." And upon Allah let the believers then rely.
Say, "[What decrees] can you expect about us except one of the two best things [Martyrdom or victory]. But [the decree] we expect about you [hypocrites] is that Allah will afflict you with punishment from Himself or by our hands? So wait, indeed, we are waiting with you."
Say, "Spend willingly or unwillingly; it will not be accepted from you. Indeed, you have been a defiantly disobedient people."
And what prevents them, that their expenditures are being accepted from them except that they disbelieved in Allah and in His Messenger, and that they do not come to prayer except while they are lazy and that they do not spend except while they are reluctant.
So let not their wealth impress you or their children. Allah only wants to punish them by that in the worldly life and their souls depart while they are infidels.
And they swear by Allah that they are of you. And they are not of you. But they are a people who are frightened.
If they could find a refuge or caves or a place to enter [and hide], they would turn to it, while they are running away.
And from them is he who criticizes you [O Muhammad] concerning the [distribution of] charities. If they are given from it, they are pleased; but if they are not given from it, then they become angry.
And if only they had been satisfied with what Allah and His Messenger had brought them and said, "Sufficient for us is Allah; Allah will give us of His bounty, and [so will] His Messenger; indeed, to Allah do we turn our hopes."
Zakah expenditures are only for the poor, and the needy, and for those who work on it, and for bringing hearts together [for Islam] and for the neck [freeing slave] and for those in debt and for expenditure in the way of Allah and for the [stranded] traveler, an ordinance from Allah. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
And from them are those who annoy the Prophet and say, "He is an ear." Say, "[It is] an ear of goodness for you, he believes in Allah, and believes the believers and [is] a mercy to those of you who believed." And those who annoy the Messenger of Allah, for them is a painful punishment.
They swear by Allah to you [Muslims] to please you. And Allah and His Messenger have more right that they should please Him, if they are believers.
Do they not know that he who opposes Allah and His Messenger, then that for him is the fire of Hell, wherein he will abide eternally? That is the great disgrace.
They hypocrites are fearing that a surah be sent down against them, informing them of what is in their hearts. Say, "keep Mocking; indeed, Allah will exit out what you are fearing."
And if you [O Muhammad] ask them, they will surely say, "We were only conversing and playing." Say, "Is it Allah and His verses and His Messenger that you [hypocrites] were mocking?"
Make no excuse; verily you have disbelieved after your belief. If We grant pardon upon a party of you. We will punish a party because they were criminals.
The hypocrite men and hypocrite women, some of them are from some others. They enjoin evil and forbid what is right and close their hands. They forgot Allah, so He forgot them. Indeed, the hypocrites, they are the defiantly disobedient.
Allah has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women, and the infidels the fire of Hell, they will dwell therein for ever. It is sufficient for them. And Allah has cursed them, and for them is a lasting punishment.
Like those people before you [hypocrites]. They were stronger than you in power and more flourishing in wealth and children. They had enjoyed in their portion [of worldly enjoyment], and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed their portion. And you indulge like they did [in idle talk]. It is those who their works have become worthless in this world and in the Hereafter. And it is those who they are the losers.
Has there not come to them the news of those before [them]? [E.g.,] the people of Noah, and Aad, and Thamud, and the people of Abraham, and the companions of Madyan, and the cities overturned? Their messengers came to them with the proofs. So Allah was not for oppressing them, but they were oppressing themselves.
And the believing men and believing women, some of them are allies of some others. They enjoin the right and forbid the evil and they establish the prayer and bring the zakah and they obey Allah and His Messenger. It is those, Allah will have mercy on them. Indeed, Allah is Mighty, Wise.
Allah has promised the believing men, and the believing women, paradises flowing from beneath it are the rivers, they will reside therein for ever, and delightful dwellings in Eden paradises. But approval from Allah is bigger. That is the great triumph.
O the Prophet! Struggle the infidels and the hypocrites and be harsh upon them. And their refuge is Hell, and wretched is the destination.
They swear by Allah that they did not say, and certainly they had said the word of disbelief; and they disbelieved after their submission. And they were obsessed with that which they could not attain. And they were not resentful except [for the fact] that Allah and His Messenger had enriched them from His bounty. So if they repent, it is better for them; but if they turn away, Allah will punish them with a painful punishment, in this world and the Hereafter. And there is no protector for them on the earth nor a helper.
And of them is he who made a covenant with Allah, [saying], "If He gives us from His bounty, we will surely spend in charity, and we will surely be of the righteous."
Then when he gave them from His bounty, they became stingy about it and turned away while they were averse [to Qur'an 9:75].
So He penalized them with hypocrisy in their hearts until a Day they will meet Him, in what they failed Allah: what they promised Him [charity, Qur'an 9:75] and in what they were lying [righteous, Qur'an 9:75].
Did they not know that Allah knows their secrets [thoughts] and their secret conversations and that Allah is the Knower of the unseen?
Those who defame the ones of the believers who give freely in the charities and [criticize] the ones who find nothing [to give] except their labour. So they [defamers] ridicule them, Allah ridiculed them [defamers]. And for them is a painful punishment.
Ask forgiveness for them, [O Muhammad], or do not ask forgiveness for them. If you should ask forgiveness for them seventy times - so Allah will not forgive them. That is because they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger, and Allah does not guide the defiantly disobedient people.
Those who stayed behind rejoiced in their staying behind the Messenger of Allah, and they disliked to strive with their wealth and their lives in the way of Allah, and they said, "Do not go forth in the heat." Say, "The fire of Hell is more intensive in heat," if they were understanding.
So let them laugh a little and much will they weep; a recompense about what they were earning [in their rejoice- Qur'an 9:81, in effect].
So if Allah should return you [O Muhammad] to a faction of them [after the expedition] and then they ask your permission to go out [to battle], say, "You will not go out with me, ever, and you will not fight an enemy with me. Indeed, you were satisfied with sitting [at home] the first time, so sit [now] with those who stay behind."
And do not pray [the funeral prayer, O Muhammad], over any of them who has died - ever - or stall yourself upon his grave. Indeed, they disbelieved in Allah and His Messenger and died while they were defiantly disobedient.
And let not their wealth and their children impress you [O Muhammad]. Allah only intends to punish them by it in this world and that their souls should depart [at death] while they are infidels.
And when a surah was sent down that: "Believe in Allah and strive hard with His Messenger," the wealthy men from them asked your permission [to stay behind] and said, "Leave us to be with them who sit [behind at home]."
They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind, and their hearts were sealed over, so they are not understanding.
But the Messenger and those who believed with him strove hard with their wealth and their lives. And those for them are [all] good things. And it is those, they are the successful ones.
Allah has prepared for them paradises, flowing from beneath it are the rivers, they will abide therein for ever. That is the great triumph.
And those who made excuses from the bedouins came [to you, O Muhammad] that permission be granted to them, and sat those who lied to Allah and His Messenger. Soon a painful punishment will afflict those of them who disbelieved.
There is not upon the weak or upon the ill or upon those who do not find anything to spend any blame when they are sincere to Allah and His Messenger. There is not against the doers of good any way [for blame]. And Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.
Nor [is there blame] against those who, when they came to you [O Muhammad] that you may give them mounts, you said, "I do not find what to mount you on." They turned back while their eyes overflowed from tears in grieving that they could not find what to spend.
The way [to blame] is only against those who ask permission of you [O Muhammad] while they are rich. They were satisfied to be with those who stay behind [at home], and Allah has sealed over their hearts, so they are not knowing.
They are making excuses to you [O believers] when you have returned to them. Say [O Muhammad], "Do not make excuse, we will not believe you. Allah has already informed us of your news. And Allah will observe your works, and [so will] His Messenger; then you will be returning to the Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, and He will inform you about what you were working."
They will swear by Allah to you [O believers] when you return to them that you may turn away from them. So turn away from them. Indeed they are unclean; and Hell is their refuge, a recompense about what they were earning [their refuge, Qur'an 9:93, in effect].
They are swearing to you [O believers] so that you may be satisfied on them. So if you are satisfied on them but indeed, Allah is not satisfied on a defiantly disobedient people.
Some bedouins are the worst in disbelief and hypocrisy and most fitted to not know the limits of what Allah has sent down upon His Messenger [Qur'an 9:91- Qur'an 9:92]. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.
And from the bedouins are those who consider what they spend, as a fine, and await for you [O believers] turns of misfortune. Upon them will be the turn of evil fortune. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.
And of the bedouins whoever believes in Allah and the Last Day and considers what he donates as a welcoming [transaction, Qur'an 57:18] with Allah and prayers of the Messenger. Verily, it [Qur'an 57:18] is a welcoming deal for them. Allah will admit them in His mercy. Indeed, Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.
And the first outstrippers from the Muhajireen and the Ansar and those who followed them in excellence - Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him, and He has prepared for them paradises [Qur'an 56:10]; flowing from beneath are the streams; they will abide therein forever. That is the great triumph.
And from whoever is around you of the bedouins [O believers], there are some hypocrites, and [also] from the people of Madinah. They persisted to continue upon hypocrisy. You [O Muhammad] do not know them, We, We know them. We will punish them twice; then they will be returned to a great punishment.
And [some] others who have acknowledged their sins. They had mixed a righteous deed with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will relent upon [forgive] them. Indeed, Allah is Forgiver, Merciful.
Take [O Muhammad] from their wealth a charity to cleanse them and purify them with it, and pray [Allah 's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your prayer is a source of tranquility for them. And Allah is Hearer, Knowing.
Do they not know that Allah is accepting the repentance from His slaves and is taking the charities and that Allah is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful?
And say, "Work, so Allah will see your all works, and [also] His Messenger, and the believers. And you will be returned to the Knower of unseen and witnessed, then He will inform you about what you were working on [in effect]."
And [there are] others held in suspense for the command of Allah, either He will punish them or He will relent upon [i.e., forgive] them. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
And those [hypocrites] who took a mosque for causing harm and disbelief and separation between the believers and as a station for whoever had fought Allah and His Messenger before. And they will surely swear, "Whatever we want is not but the best." And Allah testifies that indeed they are indeed liars.
Do not establish concerning that [the purpose, Qur'an 9:107 O Muhammad] ever. Certainly A mosque founded on the purpose of piety from the first day is truly entitled that you establish concerning it [its purpose]. In it will be men who love to be purifying themselves. And Allah loves those who purify themselves.
Then is one who founded his building upon guarding the fear of Allah and [also] His pleasure better, or one who founded his building on the edge of a cliff ready to crumble to pieces, so it crumble to pieces with him in the fire of Hell? And Allah does not guide the oppressing people.
Their building which they built will not cease to be a [source of] suspicion and shakiness in their hearts except that their hearts are cut off [i.e., death]. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.
Indeed, Allah has purchased from the believers their lives and their properties for that there is for them Paradise. They fight in the cause of Allah, so they slay and are slain, a promise upon Him truthfully in the Torah and the Gospel and the Qur'an. And who is more fulfilling in His covenant than Allah? So rejoice in your transaction which you have contracted. And this, it is the supreme triumph.
[A triumph for] the repentants, the worshippers, celebrators of Allah's praise, the wayfarers, those who bow and prostrate [in prayer], enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, and observe the limits [set by] Allah. And give good tidings to the believers.
It was not for the Prophet and those who believed to ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they were welcoming people after it has been made manifest to them that they are companions of Hellfire.
And it was not Abraham asking forgiveness for his father except of a promise that he promised him. But when it was manifested to Abraham that he was an enemy to Allah, he disassociated himself from him. Indeed Abraham was compassionate, forbearing.
And Allah would not astray a people, after He has guided them, until He made what they should fear known to them. Indeed, Allah is about everything Knowing.
Indeed, to Allah belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth; He gives life and causes death. And you [people] have other than Allah no protector nor any helper.
Indeed Allah has already relented on the Prophet, and the Muhajireen, and the Ansar who followed him in the hour of distress after that, [i.e.,] the hearts of a party of them almost deviated. Then He relented upon [forgive] them. Indeed, He was to them Kind, Merciful.
And [He also relented] upon the three who were left behind. Until the earth did confine upon them about what it was widened [Qur'an 9:25], and their souls confined against them, and they thought that there was no refuge from Allah except to Him. Then He relented upon them that they could repent. Indeed, Allah is the Acceptor of repentance, the Merciful.
O you who believed! Fear Allah and be with those who are truthful.
It was not [proper] for the people of Madinah and those around them from the bedouins, to stay behind on the Messenger of Allah, nor to seek to prefer themselves than himself. That is because they - no thirst afflicts them or fatigue or hunger in the way of Allah, or any step they step in to enrage the infidels, or any affliction they get inflicted from an enemy except it was written for them as a righteous work. Indeed, Allah does not allow to be lost the reward of the good-doers.
Nor do they spend an expenditure, small or large, nor do they cross across a valley except it is written for them. That Allah may reward them the best of what they were working.
And it is not for the believers to march forth [to battle] all together. So if only a section from every division go forth to understand in the religion, and to warn their people when they return to them, that perhaps they may beware.
O you who believed, fight those who are adjacent to you from the infidels and let them find in you harshness. And know that Allah is with those who fear [Him].
And whenever any surah is sent down, so of them [are some] who say, "Which of you has this increased him in faith?" As for those who believed, so it has increased them in faith and they rejoice.
But as for those in whose hearts is a disease, then it increased them in evil [in addition] to their evil. And they died while they were infidels.
Have they not considered that they are tested in every year once or twice? Then they do not repent nor do they remember?
And whenever any surah was sent down, some of them looked at some others [saying], "Does anyone see you?". Then they dismissed themselves. Allah has dismissed their hearts, because they are a people, not understanding.
There has certainly come to you [mankind] a messenger from yourselves. Grievous on him, what you suffered; [he is] concerned over you. With the believers, [he is] kind, merciful.
So, if they turned away [O Muhammad] then say, "Allah is Sufficient for me; there is no deity except Him. On Him I put my trust, and He is the Lord of the Great Throne."
